Hope came to Macrae the day she discovered the old man. A kindly, very retired sailor started to frequent the bakery. He told story after story of his wife, whom he claimed came from the sea. "The ocean herself was her mother!" He'd proclaim. Macrae loved to listen to him.
One day, her work done, she asked him to describe his wife.
"Beautiful, of course," he said. "With eyes like the water-"
"And kelp, always in her hair?" Macrae dared to asked. The man had laughed, though a tear glistened in the corner of his eye.
"Aye... Aye." He wouldn't say more after that.
