I cracked. I just couldn't. I dropped to the floor and cried my eyes out. Luke stood there speechless for a while. My dad had tears in his eyes he was trying to hold in. Liz looked just about ready to start balling.
Yea, my mom may not like things I do. She may not like the way I act or talk. She may not like the people I hang out with. She may not like my boyfriend. She may yell at me for all these things repeatedly and try to lock me in the house multiple times or tell me to stay away from my friends. But she's still my mom. I still love her. A lot. I have to.
I curled into a ball on the floor and just cried. I buried my face in my hands. Luke finally knelt down beside me and pulled me into his chest. His hands rubbed circles in my back.
We all stood there in silence, except for my crying. No one knew what to say. It was one of those moments when there really is nothing to say.
"Do you want to come to the hospital?" my dad asked me. His voice cracked in the middle of the sentence.
All I could do was nod my head. I stood up with tears staining my cheeks and walked behind my father.
"Luke, you can come too. And you too Liz. If you want to," my dad added.
They didn't say anything. They just followed us over to my dad's care and got in. Liz sat in the front seat while I sat in back with Luke. The car ride was silent except for the music playing on the radio. And unfortunately the song was How To Save A Life by The Fray which made me cry even harder.
We arrived at the hospital and my dad parked the car. As we walked inside, Luke walked almost on top of me to make sure I was okay. He kept his hand in mine the whole time.
My dad found out which room my mom was in and we started to walk towards it. We walked down one long hallway to the elevator at the end. My dad pushed the button to go to floor three. We all got off when it reached there. We then had to walk down another hall until we stopped in front of a doorway. My dad took a deep breath before opening the door and stepping in. The only sound in the room was the beeping of the machine next to my mother.
One look at her and that was enough for me. I broke down crying once again. Only this time I didn't fall to the floor because Luke caught me and pulled me into his arms. I buried my head in his chest and just let the tears fall.
My mother'e eyes were closed. Those beautiful blue eyes that I was always envious of. Yes I have blue eyes too. But hers are less subtle than mine. Her full lips were patted a little bit with bruises all around. Her chest was slowly moving up and down as she breathed. She had bruises and scratches everywhere.
"She's in a coma. We don't know when she will wake up," a doctor told us as he entered the room. "And we aren't absolutely sure if she'll wake up."
That did it in for my dad. He started crying and Liz went over to comfort him. Hearing my dad cry made me cry even more.
I heard somebody come running to the room. Scratch that, three somebody's.
"We heard the news," Jesy's mom said. "We're really sorry."
"Thank you for coming here. You didn't have to," I heard my father say. He sniffles a bit before he walked over to them.
"I hope she does okay."
"Me too."
I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up from Luke's chest to see Jesy and Michael standing there. Jesy pulled me into a hug.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your mom in this condition. It must be really hard for you. Just remember we are all here for you. We will be here for you. We will help you get through this," she said.
"Th-thank y-you," I managed to stutter out.
Michael gave me a small hug before I returned to Luke's arms. This time, I had my back to Luke and I was facing my mother. I closely studied the bruises and scares. There were too many to count.
"Liz?" my dad said.
"Yes?" Liz replied.
"Can you please take the four of them back to your place?"
"I most certainly can."
"I'll drive you there and then I'm coming back here."
"Okay."
"I'm not leaving, dad. I don't care if you don't want me here. I'm not leaving," I said.
"Sara, please. Please just go. There are something's that I don't want you to hear. Please. This will all work out. I promise," he replied.
"No! I'm not leaving!"
"I'll take her," Luke said.
He lifted me up over his shoulder and walked out of the room. I struggled to get out of his grip but gave up after a while. Once he, Jesy, Michael, Liz, my dad, and I were in the elevator, he put me down.
"You done struggling?" he asked.
"I guess so. But I'm tired now."
"Here. Hop on my back."
I did as he said and hopped on his back. I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. I rested my head on his shoulder and he grabbed my legs to help support me on there. I looked over at my dad who was looking at us thoughtfully. He quickly turned away when he caught me looking.
Luke carried me all the way to the car. I got inside and fell asleep on his shoulder. The next thing I remember was sort of being awake as I was being carried inside. I was placed on a bed and I heard voices.
"I'm worried about her," Luke said.
"She's taking this really hard," Jesy replied.
"I know her mother may not be her favorite person, but I know what a mother's love is like. Trust me. I've been stuck with just that for three years."
"You still haven't heard anything from your dad?" Michael asked.
"Not a thing. He could be dead and I wouldn't even know."
"What happened to his dad?" Jesy asked.
"About three years ago my parents got into a huge ass fight and my brothers and I chose sides. I chose my mom's side so when my dad left it was just me and her," Luke answered.
"Awe that's so sad!"
"I just hope Sara doesn't have to go through losing a parent. Even if its not in the same way."
"Your dad might as well be dead if he hasn't talked to you since," Michael replied.
"Thanks Mike," Luke sarcastically said.
"We'll be downstairs if you need us," Jesy said. I heard her take Michael out of the room and walk downstairs.
Luke sighed and walked over to the bed. He sat down on the edge and stayed there for a but. Then he finally laid down and wrapped his arms around me. I fell asleep shortly there after.
