Okay, I might never win Angela over after today's fiasco. At the morning meeting, Bruce, the director of our office, casually mentioned that Angela would need to take Friday and Monday off this week because I would be off Saturday and Sunday.

Angela absolutely exploded into a fit of rage. She slammed her hand down on the conference table and proclaimed that she always gets weekends off, and that she had plans that she couldn't change this weekend.

I tried to diffuse the situation by saying that I could take any days off and would be happy to work the weekend. After all, I am the newbie in the office. It was as if no one heard my offer. Bruce glared at Angela and told her to calm down if she wanted to keep her job. I was completely mortified as the other employees around the table bugged their eyes out at me, likely shocked over the sudden outburst and wondering what kind of power I wielded to be able to come in and get a weekend off after only a week in the office.

I wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. This was exactly the kind of first impression that I did not want to make with my new co-workers. Since I had not requested the weekend off, I had a pretty good idea what (or rather who) had caused all of this turmoil. This mess had Mac's name written all over it.

I tried once more to insist that I would work on the weekend, but the topic had become a standoff power play between Bruce and Angela. Bruce was not willing to budge an inch on it, and I finally decided it was best if I just stayed out of it.

The rest of the day, Angela slammed around the office and was openly hostile with me. Any hopes I had of winning her over had been washed down the drain.

I think I need to have a nice, long chat with Mac to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. I appreciate that he helped get me this cushy new job in an air-conditioned office, but I can't have him intervening and unwittingly wreaking havoc on my behalf. I must find a nice way to tell him to butt out.

For now, it looks like I get the weekend off, and it might be my last one for a really long time. So, I think I'll try to forget all of today's drama and make the most of it.
