My eyes fluttered open, and I looked around. Nash got up and leaned over me.
"Nash?"
"Hey baby girl," I heard him say as he ran his hand through my hair, stroking it.
"What happened?" I asked him, feeling confused.
"There was a complication. For the doctor to stop the bleeding, they had to give you a hysterectomy. You can't have kids anymore, ever. I'm sorry, honey," he whispered to me.
I looked at him. "Did we have them?"
"Who?" He asked me.
"The babies," I implored him.
"Yeah, all five," he smiled.
"Then, I'm good." I smiled at him as he continued to smile back at me. "But now, I would like to see my babies."
"Good, because I haven't seen them yet," he admitted to me.
"What?" I looked at him, perplexed.
"I was waiting on you," he smiled.
He helped me sit up. Man, I was sore. Then he left the room. He returned with the brothers, and each one pushed in a bassinet. I looked at all of them as they stood by them. Then they pulled them from their cribs and held them up to me.
They were beautiful. I also noticed the color of the blankets, four girls and one boy, oh dear.
"So, what are their names?" Nixon asked us as he held one girl.
I looked at Nash as he held our boy and said, "Meet Lyric, Larkin, Luna, Lakin, and I have Lex."
Nixon held Larkin, Nathan had Lakin, Noah had Lyric, Nolan held Luna while Nash held Lex. We wanted something different from our kids, and I had a feeling they would be different.
Everyone else came in to see the babies, and I held Lyric in my arms while Nash held Larkin. The others had the other three, Luna, Lakin, and Lex.
Even though I couldn't have any more children, I was good with that; these five were enough. Plus, Nash was happy he didn't have to get fixed, unlike the devil twins. They got set shortly after theirs, and they scheduled Nixon after Kat had the twins.
"They are so tiny," Pat said, holding Luna.
"The doctor said they'll put on weight. Multiples are always tiny, but they are all in good health," Nash mentioned as he traded off with another baby. He wanted equal time with all of them.
"Well, I guess me and Mom can help," Nate said, holding Lex. "Someone will have to protect this boy from his sisters."
"Plus, we'll be close by," Nixon said, holding Lakin.
That would be a challenge, but we could do it. I hope so.
After a week of being in the hospital, they finally released us. Since I couldn't carry anything, Nate took two car seats; Nash brought two, and Pat brought one.
That would be a significant change.
We came home and got settled in with the quints. Once the babies were in their cribs, we stared at them. Yes, I had them move all their cribs into one room. I didn't want to be running back and forth. They could have their rooms when they were older.
I stood at their cribs as Nash wrapped his arms around me. "They are beautiful."
"No, they are perfect. All five of the kids," I said as they all slept peacefully.
"You know, once the doctor releases you, me and you are having some fun," he smirked.
I gave him a look. "Good thing I bought lotion because you have seven weeks to go, buddy." I patted his chest as I slowly walked away. God, I was sore.
It took a few weeks, but we got things down to a tee.
"Throw me a diaper," Nash said to me as I tossed a diaper and wipes to him.
"Throw me the powder," I said as he tossed me the powder. Then we moved to the next one. It was like a conveyor belt, changing, feeding, bathing, and overall handling the quints, but we did it. Pat and Nate helped so we could get some sleep, and the brothers held down the bakery for us.
We also took them in for a checkup, and they were doing so well. The quints were putting on weight and health. That was a relief. I was also due for my checkup in a few weeks.
Life was crazy with five little ones but so worth it. I was used to chaos with the brothers, so this was nothing new to me.
At one point, Nash and I collapsed on the bed, ready to pass out when one started crying, Larkin. She was our temperamental one.
Lyric was our take charge of one. Lakin was our fussy one. Luna was our little flirt and Lex well; he was our laid back one. Good thing because his sisters so outnumbered him. They reminded me of the brothers so much; it was uncanny.
We got up, and Nash picked up Larkin, and she promptly settled down.
"Geez, you would think Nixon was here," I giggled.
"Yeah, you need not remind me. Kat is due next week," he mentioned as he held Larkin.
"It's funny, but they all remind me of you and your brothers," I said, picking up Lyric.
"How so?"
"Lyric is like Noah, Larkin is like Nixon, Lakin is like Nathan, Lex is like you, and Luna is like Nolan."
"Oh god, that's a scary thought," Nash chuckled.
"But it's true. Each baby calms down when one of them comes around," I said to him, and he thought about it.
"That is scary," he remarked.
We looked at the babies and got them settled, then finally made our way to bed. It was exhausting but so worth it. The labor was not so much, but everything else was worth it.
We fell asleep. I knew in a few hours, someone would need changing or feeding, but a few hours was worth it. God did I miss sleep.
