~an unfulfilled promise~

"why did millie keep all this crap?" sadie retorted, sorting through some boxes.

"it's not crap" finn said.

the two were in millie's room, looking through it for anything valuable, anything worth keeping, and donating the rest. but it was hard. everything that finn laid his eyes on in the room was valuable because it was hers.

millie was laying on her own bed. not that anyone could see her. she watched as her best friend and boyfriend sorted through her things.

millie had grown used to the feeling of not being able to be seen. it had only been about a week, but she got used to the feeling of being a ghost and having people walk right through you. but she couldn't accustom to the loneliness.

so she often talked to herself, sometimes asking rhetorical questions to the living. it wasn't like they were going to answer.

"god, she was such a nerd," sadie said softly, placing the books in the donation box. there were selected comic books, sci-fi novels, and science theory books.

"so are you, sadie," millie said, on her side, watching the two bicker.

"just shut up, sadie. you're making it worse," finn said, opening a small, wooden box. sadie rolled her eyes.

sadie didn't want to seem like she was disrespecting millie. but sadie didn't really like to deal with her emotions. she used to be an emotional person until she put on a "tough girl" facade. she found it easier to poke fun at depressing things rather than letting those depressing things break her heart.

"holy shit," finn said, letting out a breath. he was holding a small wooden box that millie recognized as her old jewelry box. she couldn't imagine what would take his breath away.

"what?" sadie asked, nearing finn, curious.

finn pulled out a small silver ring. it wasn't very fancy or extravagant, but to finn, it meant the whole world. he smiled softly, "it's our promise ring,"

millie felt her heart sink. she had almost forgotten about the promise ring. the one finn had given to her about three months ago on formal night.

sadie raised her eyebrows, "woah. you guys were promised?"

finn nodded, then started to chuckle softly, "yeah. it was right on top of all the jewelry. even the necklace she wore last week was underneath it. she must've just taken it off,"

but millie never took it off.

she always kept it on.

she was wearing on that day when the crash took place.

sadie sat back down, next to a box and continued placing books inside. finn couldn't take his eyes off the ring. he kept twiddling with it in his hand, his fingers skimming the edges of the silver.

finn chewed on his lip.

then he held it out to sadie, "she'd want you to have it,"

"what!?" millie yelled.

sadie stared at finn in disbelief, "what?"

"take it," finn encouraged.

"yeah, sure, just take the thing that meant the most to me in the whole world," millie retorted, throwing herself back onto the bed.

sadie drew her eyes together and locked eyes with finn, "finn, i'm not gonna take the symbol of your love-"

"sadie, god damn it, just take it!" finn said, wiggling it.

sadie shook her head, "why?"

finn traced the floor, "i don't want to be reminded about a future i can't have,"

finn tossed the ring to sadie.

sadie caught it with both hands. she looked at the small silver ring in the palms of her hand. it used to symbolize so much. now it was just a hunk of metal.

"are these boxes full? i'm going to take them to the car," finn mumbled.

sadie looked up at him, "what? oh. yeah,"

finn grabbed a box and carried it outside her room.

sadie stared intently at the ring before slowly slipping it on her finger.

millie snickered, "oh yeah, sure. go ahead. go wear the ring that i was supposed to get married in," millie sat up on the bed, clutching the mattress' edge so hard her nails dug into them. she stared directly at sadie, who was admiring the ring on her finger, as millie's voice started to escalate, "go ahead, it's not like i can stop you!"

sadie whipped her head around until her eyes landed on the bed that millie sat on.

suddenly, her eyes went wide, and her mouth dropped open. she started to shake and crawl away from the bed, "oh my god!"

millie looked behind her, drawing her eyes together. but there was nothing.

sadie looked terrified. her body was shaking. her breaths were shaky. she was shrinking into herself, pressing herself against the wall. sadie was pale. it was like she had seen a ghost.

suddenly, millie's eyes widened, as she stared directly into sadie's eyes.

and sadie's eyes were staring into hers.

she didn't know how. she didn't know why. but millie knew.

sadie could see her.
