~new news~

three days before the funeral took place, millie was laying on the couch, watching television with her mother.

her mother was talking on the phone, "do you know who cut the breaks yet?"

her mother was talking about millie's car.

someone had cut her breaks off. someone wanted her to die.

her mother had hired some investigators to find out who did it.

and as her mother talked, millie just laid next to her mother and listened.

of course, her mother couldn't see her. millie was practically thin air. she was a ghost. literally. but millie could see everything. she could see the struggle and cries of her mother. the tears shed from her father. the isolation of her brother. the confusion about the weeping from her little sister.

being dead wasn't fun, as millie found out.

there wasn't very much to do.

she couldn't pick up things; her hand just went straight through them. she could walk through walls and that was about the only cool thing she could do. so most of the time she just walked to different people's houses. she looked in on their lives, which were far more interesting than hers.

three days before the funeral, the family received shocking news.

the coroner had examined millie's body and found an abnormality. well, not an abnormality. it just....wasn't something you saw every day.

the coroner called her in and told her something important had been found during the inspection. he had asked for the parents and finn.

so her mother and father and a somber, confused finn went in. millie followed, silently.

and the coroner told them the news, sitting across from the three at a desk.

"millie wasn't the only one in the crash," he said, folding his hands together.

the three drew their eyebrows together.

the coroner took a deep breath in, "it seems like millie was pregnant,"

millie's eyes widened. pregnant?

"about two months in,"

"what?" finn choked out. her parents were horrified. their jaws were dropped open. they turned their heads to look at finn. finn had a hint of a blush in his cheeks, but for the most part, he was confused.

millie was just as confused.

there was no way.

finn shook his head, his eyebrows drawn together, "that doesn't make any sense,"

"what?" millie's mom asked.

"millie and i never- we never-" finn said, raising his eyebrows at millie's parents. millie's parents reciprocated the action. finn reiterated his point, "there's just no way that she could be pregnant,"

"you don't have to lie," the coroner said.

"no. i'm not lying! i'm being serious. why would i lie? millie and i never.....did the thing," finn said, his facial features tense, and confused, "she....we would never do anything-"

millie's mom suddenly cut him off, speaking in a very serious, low, quiet tone, "finn. i believe you. now, nothing from this room is to be repeated to anyone. understand?"

finn bit his lip and nodded.

millie's mom stood up and walked straight out the door before being chased by her husband.

pregnant.

pregnant.

millie was pregnant.

millie couldn't get the concept out of her head. if she didn't die in a car accident, she would've pushed a baby out. but the thing is, millie didn't remember. she didn't remember sleeping with anybody. she would never cheat on finn. there was just no way.

she did remember going to the doctor, and even though the doctor suggested the idea of pregnancy and ran tests about pregnancy, the doctor said they were all negative.

finn was still sitting in the table across from the coroner. he was empty, just like he'd been for the past few days. he was staring at the floor, hunched over, his hands folded neatly together.

"thank you," finn said, as he stood up and left. mille followed him as he got in his car. finn didn't start the car right away. millie sat there and watched his empty stare. he just kept staring until tears leaked from his eyes. then he pounded on the steering wheel, hitting its rim with his bare knuckles. he was sobbing.

finn wanted to punch something.

he wanted to scream. he wanted to yell and cry.

finn hadn't lost one that day. he had lost two.
