~an echo in the dark~
after the final bell rang, millie sprinted to find sadie.
she was smiling from ear to ear, a strange feeling that tickled her stomach; euphoria. finn knows. finn knows that she's there, watching over him. he had almost said her name. which meant he would be willing to put the ring on and see her. he could see her. talk to her. be with her.
she turned the corner to her locker and yelled, "sadie!"
sadie looked up from her phone and raised her eyebrows at millie.
"janitor's closet. now," millie said, trying to conceal her smile.
sadie nodded and slowly made her way over to the janitor's closet, making sure that no one saw her go in. she turned on the light to illuminate millie's ecstatic smile plastered on her face.
"woah. what happened?" sadie asked, smiling.
millie bit her lip, "finn knows,"
sadie's smile dropped, "what?"
millie maintained her smile, "finn! he knows i'm here. he called out to me in the bathroom-"
"wait what?! how.....how did he know....," sadie trailed off.
millie drew her eyebrows together, "why are you acting like this is a bad thing? he knows i'm here now, you can give him the ring and we can-"
"what, millie? you can what? you can't do anything. if he sees you, it'll ruin his life," sadie said, crossing her arms.
"no! i just want him to know i'm ok. and i miss him. i want him to see me," millie said.
"if he sees you, he's going to want to be with you. how is he supposed to explain that he's in love with a ghost? what is he supposed to do next? marry you? have a wedding where he's the only person that can see you? have ghost babies-"
"sadie stop, please," millie said, tearing up, "i just want him to know-"
sadie shook her head, "millie, you have to let him move on. just stop....this. it's not going to end well, trust me okay?"
millie let a tear slide down her cheek, "sadie.....i.....-"
"i can't let you do this to finn," sadie said, her fingertips brushing the ring.
"no!"' millie called out, "don't take it off. i understand,"
and millie did. even though she wanted to be with finn, most of all, she wanted finn to be happy. and if hiding herself from him was the only way, then it would have to be done.

finn was sitting on his bed alone. it was three thirty in the afternoon and he was staring into the mirror.
finn heard from somewhere that you could still see ghosts in the mirror because they are like some kind of window into another dimension. he had been sitting there for about fifteen minutes, hoping for someone- something, to appear. but nothing did.
except for a memory.
~~
finn stared into the mirror, gazing upon his appearance in the mirror, as he had done so many times. he was wearing a suit kind of outfit- a collared shirt with a jacket. finn had the tie hanging loose around his neck
finn suddenly heard some rustling in the bathroom, probably millie doing her makeup. since finn's parents were out of town, millie stayed the night. finn claimed that he needed some comfort before the day of his big job interview for an internship at the local hospital, but he really just liked being around her.
and saying, "i love you," right before going to bed was the best feeling in the world, especially when his arms were wrapped around her warm, tiny body.
suddenly millie came out of his bathroom and looked up from her phone. she smiled, her mouth wide open, "hey, you look good," she said. she threw her phone on the bed and approached him, pressing her lips to his cheek. finn smiled and turned his head as millie pressed her lips to his quickly.
"you look really good. i think with your outfit alone you'll get the job. who needs a personality anyway?" millie said, pulling away.
finn giggled, "yeah. for the interview, i was going for classy. my mom told me to wear the suit though,"
millie smiled let her eyes trail up and down his body, as she circled him, trying to capture every angle from which he could be seen. finn smiled, trying to follow her gaze, "trying to check out my ass?"
millie gave him a playful punch to the shoulder, "i'm looking for wrinkles, finny. may be your clothes need ironing,"
finn chuckled, "you are such a mom,"
maybe one day, finn thought then.
"well, you're all good. except for the tie," millie said, crossing her arms in front of him.
finn bit his lip, "uh....yeah. you see.....i can't exactly tie a tie,"
millie raised her eyebrows, "what about for formal? didn't you wear a tie then?"
"that was my dad," finn clarified.
millie rolled her eyes, as she reached up to grab the ends of the unraveled tie from around his neck, "i have to do everything in this house,"
she started folding and tying the fabric together until it eventually was folded neatly into a tie. finn's eyes widened as he ran his fingertips down the smooth cotton, "wow....where did you learn this?"
millie giggled, letting her palm pat against his chest, "i was preparing for this moment,"
millie turned towards the mirror with a black frame, and yet again scanned finn's body again, "there. now you look perfect,"
~~~~~~~~~~~~
back then, looking in the mirror would give him confidence and hope. now, he was hoping for the same thing.
