~ polaroids and telephones~

finn and millie reached home fast. after finn calmed himself down, which took longer than millie had hoped, he was able to drive home.

millie followed finn inside his house. as soon as they walked through the door, of all people, sadie was sitting at the kitchen table, talking to finn's mom.

steam rose from the coffee cups in front of both ladies. as sadie's eyes focused on millie, she suddenly recalled all of last night. the voicemails.

then she hit her hand against her forehead.

the voicemails. she forgot to come over to review the voicemails.

she mouthed to sadie, i forgot.

sadie smiled.

finn put his keys on the counter and drew his eyebrows together, "hey?" he asked, as sadie's glance transferred from millie to finn, "what are you doing here?"

finn's mom answered, "sadie wanted to check in on you. see how you were doing,"

sadie kept her gaze on finn before glancing towards mrs.wolfhard again, "yeah. but unfortunately, my mom probably has lunch ready for me, so i better get back,"

finn's mom smiled, "don't worry. finn can take you,"

finn froze as she walked towards his room, "what? i just got back-"

"actually, mrs.wolfhard, that would be nice," sadie responded.

"so, how'd it go?" sadie asked after they hopped in the car.

"what?" finn whipped his head towards her.

"the interrogation. with the investigator. at millie's house?" sadie asked.

finn relaxed, sighing, and gripped the wheel, turning the car on.

"it was okay. i don't think i helped at all," finn said.

"you were gone for a long time. i thought you'd be back by ten, tops," sadie said.

finn said, turning down the radio, "i was watching ava,"

sadie giggled, "you? babysitting?"

finn smiled and shrugged, thinking of the smiling six-year old, "she wasn't that hard to babysit,"

finn stared to pull out of the driveway. sadie sat awkwardly, looking in her rear view mirror, making sure millie was there. millie gave sadie a thumbs up and a sad smile.

as he started to drive, "so. how are you?"

he sighed, "good. tired but good,"

sadie raises her eyebrows and chuckled, "i feel like you don't really mean that,"

"well, no shit sadie. what am i supposed to say? everyday i wake up and i feel like i'm being run over by a truck," finn snapped back.

sadie bit her lip and looked in her lap, "i talked to your mom. it seems like she has no idea what's going on these days. she didn't even know where you were. you should talk to her,"

finn shook her head, "she's not much help in the 'grieving process.' she just kind of let's me be,"

sadie shook her head before glancing at him, "that sucks,"
