~revelations~
far away from the house blasted rap music people grinded on one another for, far away from the hazy and smoky hallways, far away from the idiocy the drunk minors endured, was the tranquil peace of the night. it was nearly one in the morning. it was dark, except for sadie's phone flashlight. she was dragging him away from it all.
millie had no idea what was going on.
but she trusted sadie; she trusted that sadie would do what was right for finn.
they kept heading east, trudging through the light snow that decorated their neighborhood. they were in pure snow, going through the backwoods of a neighborhood millie had a hard time recognizing. trees sheltered the pair from the snowflakes that danced from the sky.
"where are we going?" finn asked, crossing his arms.
"shush, we're almost there," sadie said as finn followed close behind.
"i swear to fucking god, sadie, if you try to convince me that millie's still alive i will-"
"we're here," sadie said, pointing her flashlight up.
millie and finn followed her flashlight up to locate some old wood that was nailed together to make their treehouse. they hadn't been in it since freshman year.
millie showed a hint of a smile on her face.
"holy shit," finn said under her breath, "this is still here?"
"well, we never tore it down," sadie said, nearing the base of the ladder. she tapped on the rungs, saying, "up we go,"
all three climbed up into their small treehouse. they had built it in fifth grade with the help of their parents. it couldn't be more than ten feet wide and eight feet tall. sadie went in and dusted off some spider webs that hung from the walls like curtains.
"i still come here every now and then, just to check on it," sadie admitted, running her hands over the dusty beams.
"wow," finn said.
the old tree house still had a few beanbags and a small table. there were about three or four lanterns scattered around the place. one was out of battery, but they turned the rest on to illuminate the small room.
sadie fell into the hot pink bean bag and finn seated himself on the light blue one.
sadie looked at finn.
finn just kept looking around with a somber smile on his face.
sadie crossed her arms, "okay, what's up?"
finn suddenly snapped into reality, "what?"
sadie shrugged her shoulders, "why are you ignoring us?"
finn rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his hair, "it's been like, two days. god,"
sadie narrowed her eyebrows, "two days is enough,"
"you don't like jack and wyatt?"
"this has nothing to do with jack and wyatt," sadie said.
finn bit his lip, staring at sadie, then whispered, "it's so hard,"
sadies eyes traced the floor, then she glanced up, "i know. but this is the time where we need you the most. and clearly it's the time where you need us,"
"i just....." finn started, "i never got to say goodbye. the last thing i ever said to her, i barely remember. god, i just loved her so much. she was like, the only reason i got up in the morning. and she.....i don't even think she loved me,"
millie's heart fell. finn hung his head.
sadie drew her eyebrows together, "wha-why would you think that?"
finn ran a hand through his hair, "promise me that whatever i say in here, stays in here?"
sadie nodded.
finn sucked in a breath, his heart pounding out of his chest.
"millie was pregnant,"
suddenly, sadie's eyes widened, "what?!"
finn traced the floor, a slight rose pink blush tinted his cheeks, "but the thing is.....me and millie never......"
sadie stared sympathetically at finn, before glaring at millie.
then sadie turned back to finn.
"i'm so sorry," sadie said.
"all this pain she's causing me. she couldn't even have the guts to tell me she was with another guy," finn said, his voice shaky, tears leaking out of his eyes, "it just....we were together three years. three years. that's longer than some people's marriages,"
"finn-"
"i-i-i'm sorry," finn said, wiping away tears. he stood up, walking towards the entrance, "i can't do this, i'll go,"
"finn....." sadie trailed off, not knowing how to comfort him.
he stopped before lowering himself onto the ladder. he had his hand grasping onto the doorway, and his head looking down at the ground. neither sadie nor millie could see his face.
"you know, this is where millie and i had our first kiss?"
sadie bit her lip, "i didn't,"
finn chuckled, but sadie could still hear the shakiness in his voice, "i just....... i just wonder what our last kiss meant. did she still love me then?"
and that was the last thing finn said, before he grasped onto the rails and lowered himself onto the ladder.
sadie heard the ladder creak as he de-escalated.
as soon as she heard finn's footprints disappear, sadie whipped her head towards millie.
"what the fuck? you slept with another guy?" sadie asked, standing up.
millie held her hands up in defense, "no! i would never do that! i don't remember any of that!"
"how could you not tell me?!" sadie asked, taking a chair and throwing at millie. millie winced, but the chair passed right through her, hitting the wall.
sadie looked hurt. she looked so incredibly hurt. it was like she'd been stabbed in the heart.
"how could you not tell me you were pregnant!?" sadie screamed.
"i didn't know!" millie yelled back.
"how could you not know? didn't you go to the doctor?" sadie asked.
"i did! he told me i wasn't pregnant!" millie screamed.
sadie drew her eyebrows together in disbelief, "unbelievable. still lying to me even after you're dead,"
"sadie-"
"i don't wanna hear it," sadie said. she pulled off the metal ring from her pale, skinny finger and threw it on the ground. she headed towards the door, and descended down the ladder, out of millie's sight.
millie didn't chase after her.
