~what happened to finn?~

"i think we should make mcdonald's after formal a thing," millie said, picking fries from the bright red box.

finn smiled, laying down, his head resting on the pillow.

the two were in a nearly empty mcdonald's parking lot at two in the morning, eating fries and milkshakes in the back of finn's pick up truck.

they were lying down, staring at the stars.

"fry?"

"yeah, fry me daddy," finn said in a high picked voice.

"shut up," millie laughed, dangling a fry in front of his mouth. finn grabbed it from her and ate it. he stared up into the dark abyss up above him. he was nervous. just as finn had expected, formal was the best night of the year. millie and finn were dancing and having a lot of fun hanging out with friends. he expected it to be the best night of the year because, with every passing day, she made his life more interesting.

he sucked in a deep breath as millie gazed at the starry night sky.

"hey millie?" finn asked.

"what?" millie asked.

"do you.....do you think you could see a future with me?" finn asked.

millie bit her lip, "i mean. we're only in high school. but yeah. i think about it every now and then,"

finn but his lip and sat up, taking millie's hands, having her sit up, too.

"um. i-uh- got you this,"

finn pulled out a velvet box.

millie gasped, "finn-"

"i'm not proposing. but. we don't talk about the future a lot. but when we do, i get excited for the life that awaits us. i think....we should invest more in our future. and may be eventually be married. i just.....god, i love you so much. i fell in love with you for a reason, and it's because you're perfect. you're perfect for me, millie bobby brown. so this," he gestured to the unopened navy blue velvet box, as millie's eyes were glassy, and a grateful smile was plastered on her face, "this is a ring for our love. and hopefully how it will never break no matter what it has to endure,"

millie was blushing, tears sliding down her cheeks, looking at the box.

"so?" finn asked, opening the box to reveal a small metal ring.

she wiped away a few tears, "oh my god, finn. i love you so much. yes, yes, yes!!! "

finn smiled, and took the ring out the box, and took her hand, sliding it onto her delicate fingers.

she examined it for a few seconds, before looking back up at finn. she smiled and leaned in to kiss him softly.

~~~~~
the mcdonald's parking lot held a lot of memories for the two.
millie noticed that finn went there more often since millie's official death. he would always get fries and a milkshake. then he would sit in the back of his pickup truck and stare at the people or the sky or the void. it depended on the day.
millie was starting to get worried for finn.
during lunches at school, he didn't sit with noah, gaten, caleb, and sadie anymore.
he sat with the drug addicts and party throwers like jack and wyatt.
millie followed him to make sure he didn't get into any trouble. but he was isolating himself.
"i can't believe he's over there," sadie said.
"what happened?" gaten asked, biting into his sandwich, "did you do anything?"
sadie glanced at millie who was sitting in the empty space across from her. sadie kept the ring on because even though millie was dead, sadie still enjoyed her presence as if she were alive.
"i don't know. maybe being with us reminds him of her," sadie lied, staring milie directly in the eyes.
"what are you looking at?" caleb asked, trying to follow her stare.
sadie looked down at her food, "sorry. spacing out. i'm just tired,"
"we all are," gaten said, "ever since millie.....it's been hard to sleep,"
sadie nodded and looked up again at millie.
"well," sadie began, "let's just not think about it. let's go back to finn,"
millie bit her lip and watched finn across the cafeteria. he was eating a slice of pizza, and he was sitting next to jack, wearing his leather jacket to protect him from the cold bitterness of the snow. millie watched him. he was ignoring everyone. he was disassociating himself. he was staring off into space to be alone with his thoughts.
sadie continued, "finn is probably going to be at jack's party, considering they're all buddy-buddy now. i say we go and try to talk to him there,"
"okay......" caleb dragged on, "what would we say to him?"
sadie bit her lip, "i don't know. maybe, 'stop being such an asshole and come grieve with your friends,'"
"sadie, what the hell?" millie asked.
"sadie," noah cautioned, glaring at her.
"sorry," sadie replie. she glared at millie, before looking at her more lively friends," just try to knock some sense into him instead of getting drunk,"
