manic monday
~
monday is known to be the worst of days. everybody dreads it because it brought the end to something wonderful. monday snapped people back into reality.
for millie, she dreaded it the most.
she had hoped that the news of her being pregnant wouldn't spread. but clearly, she didn't know jack grazer well enough to understand that even he had no mercy for the dead.
she saw a smug jack leaning against the lockers with an arm sling around beverly, loading people's mouth with whispers that stung millie like she was hit with a bullet.
and it hurt more than any car crash.
millie would know.
as she walked the halls, she heard the whispers. the whispers of millie's "betrayal" finn. the whispers of her new "slut" title. the whispers debating about whether or not she was going to abort the baby. they were all stupid whispers that seemed to cut deeper into millie's skin with each word that was spoken.
suddenly, finn walked through the door.
millie looked up. she felt a wave of relief; for that was the usual effect his face had on her. but then, her heart sank. he was the reason for these whispers.
he went straight to his locker. he looked angrier today. he had on his usual white button-up shirt with his comfy and warm leather jacket. his black curly hair was more mussed than usual, and he kept his eyes straight.
suddenly, someone slammed his locker shut.
"are you fucking kidding me finn?" they yelled, throwing their palm against the locker to initiate a large bang. finn dropped his books, startled.
it was sadie.
she was furious, and the red hair accentuated it. sadie's face was burning red.
"sadie! what the hell?!" finn exclaimed, leaning down to grab his books.
but before he could, sadie grabbed his shirt, and slammed his back against the lockers, fury and fire locked in her eyes. finn's eyes met hers, and her eyes sent daggers, piercing his heart and skin. every time sadie blinked, it was like the dagger was being twisted.
"how could you?" sadie asked, her angry eyes getting glassy, pressing him harder against the wall.
finn couldn't meet her eyes. even though sadie didn't say anything, finn seemed to know exactly what she was talking about.
"sadie, i was drunk," finn said, his voice breaking, looking to the side, searching for anything to avoid meeting sadie's eyes.
sadie drew her eyebrows further together, "you ruined her, don't you understand!?"
she was yelling.
"i didn't mean to-"
"it doesn't matter what you meant," sadie said.
"sadie, can you let go-"
"finn! have you ever stopped and thought what she'd think of your behavior?" sadie asked.
finn looked down at the ground.
sadie bit her lip and shook her head, saying, "i'm really disappointed in you,"
and with that, the red-headed girl released him and ran away.
finn snapped out of his trance and saw that a crowd had formed around him and sadie. and as sadie ran towards the exit of the school, the crowd seemed to part like the red sea, letting the red storm through.
finn looked down and went to pick up his books again, as the crowd began disbanding.
millie watched as mike picked up his books, alone, with people laughing behind his backs, and people who he thought were his friends abandoning him.
millie saw him take a deep breath. watched his eyes become glassy as tears formed in the back of his eyes. the bell rang.
the ringing of the bell sent everybody to their home room. a large crowd seemed to swarm over him.
then, as the crowd died down, he ran.
he ran towards the bathroom.
millie followed him.
millie watched as finn threw his books into the corner of the empty bathroom. he took off his backpack and placed it in the floor, and searched quickly and furiously through the front pocket.
millie watched, curiously.
then he pulled out a half-full pill bottle.
millie gasped.
she felt her heart breaking in tiny pieces, the shattered shards piercing her chest.
finn stood in front of the mirror, his eyes searching his own. he glanced at the pill bottle, then back at the mirror.
millie was crying, if that even was possible.
she wanted to be with finn, but not like this.
finn was crying too. he had a small, gentile tears sliding down his cheeks and his eyes, blurred by the tears- opened the pill bottle.
millie tried.
she tried smacking the pill bottle out of his hand, but it was no use. every time she tried to knock it out of his hands, her hand was like a hologram. she couldn't touch anything without somebody wearing the ring. it was worse with each swing she took because it reminded her of how powerless she was.
but she kept doing it anyway.
finn stared into the pill bottle, his breaths shaky, and he started to lift it up to his lips.
until millie's hand swatted the pill bottle into a corner, the pills spilling out onto the concrete bathroom floor.
finn's eyes widened at the bottle and he backed up against the wall. his eyes were wide and his hands were close to his sides.
his chest heaved up and down, his breaths more unsteady.
millie was feeling the same thing.
either somebody had put on the ring at that convenient moment, or millie's passion for wanting to save finn defied the laws of being a ghost.
suddenly, a voice rung through the school halls.
"finn wolfhard, please report to the principal's office,"
