~a metaphorical punch to the stomach~
millie found that charlie was going to the bar.
he worked at lucky's bar. it was a really big bar- physically and economically. it was really popular with the locals and travelers who like to drink.
he's worked there for about two years. he started right after he dropped out of college.
charlie was there a lot.
charlie walked into the bar, where night life was thriving. most of the booths were filled with people drinking or people on a date. it was pretty crowded for a sunday night.
as soon as he came in, he approached the counter and talked to a man. it seemed pretty friendly.
"hey, jason,"
"charlie, what are you doing here?"
"modine wants a shipment right now," charlie said, leaning over the counter, whispering.
millie drew her eyebrows together.
modine? winona's ex? the forty year old drug dealer?
"okay. we have a pretty good amount right now. is he paying you any extra for the inconvenience?"
charlie laughed and shook his head, "nah. i do what he asks. to be honest, i'm kind of scared of him. the lengths he'd go to get what he wants,"
jason started cleaning a glass from someone who had left, as his eyes flicked up towards charlie, "what has he done?"
charlie bit his lip. his expression fell. he stared into the glass that jason shined, and he shook his head, "do you have any ice cream? it's the only way to shut my sister up,"
"yeah" he said, "i'll give it to you on your way out,"
charlie nodded and headed towards the door to the back.
the door was password protected so he entered in a code and pressed the door open quickly.
millie followed. the door, turns out, was thick and heavy. behind the door, was a long hallway that seemed to stretch for miles. there were doors with numbers on them, and he passed by them quickly, focused on his destination.
millie was amazed.
she had no idea lucky's back was this big. about halfway down the hallway, charlie stopped. there was another code on the door.
he looked around once, before pressing the door open. millie went in.
her eyes widened.
"holy shit," she whispered.
the walls and floors were concrete, with plastic tables set up. there were little enclosures of plants, growing. as millie walked trough the room, her eyes scanned the plants. she bit her lip, as she realized what it was, gazing at charlie.
"you stupid shit," she said, shaking her head. her eyes scanned the labels of the plants.
marijuana. opium poppies. coca leaves. meth. psilocybin mushrooms. sassafras roots.
