Chapter 14

Veronica POV

"Do you both solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but truth?" Bailiff the Head of the committee asked.

"We do" both me and Nat assured.  "Why haven't we yet heard from Captain Rogers?" He asked. "We don't know what there is left for him to say. I think the wreck in the middle of the Potomac made his point fairly " Nat said.

"Well, he could explain how this country's expected to maintain its national security now that he and you both have laid waste to our intelligence apparatus. And you Ms. Booth, playing a bigger part in designing those" he said.

" I didn't know this was going to happen. HYDRA was selling you lies, not intelligence" I said.

"You know you're in trouble right?" He asked. "Yes, I do. But I also know that we put our life's on line a saved a million people from dying" he said.

"What about your freak stuff that got released.  You have something to say about it?" He asked.

" They've always been there. But they were never a part of my living. They did help me to fight an invading alien army, but they don't define my life. You can revoke my PHDs, but I am a 100 percent sure that they were never a part in the process of acquiring them" I said.

"You will have your Doctrates Ms.Booth. You earned them. We don't think its fair to get them back" he said. Nat smirked at me. I felt glad. Then they turned to Nat

"Agent you should know, that there are some on this committee who feel, given your service record, both for this country and against it, that you belong in a penitentiary, not mouthing of Capitol Hill" And looks like Me. "Booth could have joined you now" said Scudder. Me and Nat looked at each other.

"You're not gonna put us in prison. You're not gonna put any of us in a prison. You know why?" Nat asked. "Do enlighten us" he responded.

"Because you need us" I spoke up. Everyone turned to me. "The World is a vulnerable place. We could have helped in making it that way. But we're also the ones best qualified to defend it. If you want you can arrest us, we are always there. But make sure if you do, you will not come back again to us seeking help" I said. Both of us stood up and made our way out.

I made my way into the cemetery. Sam said they're here. I saw Fury coming towards me.

"Weird..to see dead man walking" I said. "Get use to it" he said. "So you got them back?" He asked. I smiled.

"I never lost them" I said. "What are you planning to do?" He asked. "I don't know. Man, now I think why we should have not let SHIELD down" I said.

"Told you.....but I got something" he said and took a file out from his jacket and handed it to me.

"What's this?" I asked opening it. "The Council was actually not okay when they found out about you through the internet. But they did appreciate your work in the Project. And your service. So they like you represent the Avengers in the Council" he said.

"And what is my work in representing the Avengers?" I asked. "Justify acts. In future" he said. I looked at him.

"And if the acts cannot be justified? " I asked again. "Then your in trouble" he said. "I'm not interested" I said.

"It's not an offer. It's an order. Put that weight on your shoulders and show them that the World needs the Avengers " he said .

I didn't say anything. "You never like me living my life, do you?" I asked smiling. "You are living one. Enjoy it" he said and walks past me.

I walked further in and noticed Sam and Steve. Steve just turning around after talking to Nat getting a file from her. I made my way towards them.

"Look at you, not even a single scratch" I said to Steve. "Perks of being a super soldier" he smiled.

"You're not going with Fury?"Sam asked. "Looks like he doesn't want me around this time" I said.

"Any plans?" Steve asked. I shook my head saying no. "I have no idea what I am going to do" I said. Suddenly Sam's phone started ringing. He excused and went aside to attend it.

"What is that?" Steve asked looking at the file in my hands. "Oh!..this long story...I'll tell you afterwards" I said. And then we again stood there in silence.

"I've been waiting to ask you. You said you will give something to me once I complete the mission " he said smiling.

"That......how about some other time?" I smirked taking two steps back. "No" he said walking towards me. I took more steps backwards and he kept advancing.

"No..Ronnie. Don't do that" he gave me a warning. "Oh..I like to do that Rogers. I love being chased by you" I said. I took more steps back when he pulled by my waist so that our bodies were now close, our faces inches apart.

He looked at me in the eye. "You still want to be chased by me?" He asked. I looked at him in the eye. "You have no idea, how badly I want to be chased by you" I whispered.

"Looks like I caught you" he said and connected our lips. Fireworks bursted in my stomach. God, how long I wanted this to happen.

Our lips perfectly molded together. I wrapped my hands around him dropping the file on the ground. He too had a file in his hand which he dropped and placed both his hands on my waist.

At last I got him. God's righteous man. Captain America. The person I've been falling in love for more than two years.

We slowly broke apart. "Was that on your list?" I asked softly. He placed his forehead on mine. "Top on the list" he said smiling. I returned one.

"Tony's gonna kill me" he said laughing. "We'll explain" I said. "How?" He asked. "Um....by showing him that you are such a good kisser" I said and connected our lips again. I could sense him smiling in the kiss.

"I've been waiting for this to happen....." Sam spoke up behind us. I turned around to look at him. "But not in a cemetery " he said looking pissed.

Me and Steve laughed.
