Chapter 8

Veronica POV

I was down in the lab where they kept the Hellicarriers. I had to check if the weapons are working each and every day and report it to Fury.

"Dr. Booth... do you copy?" I heard someone in my com. "Yes.....this is Booth copying" I said.

"This is Alexander Pierce. I want you in my office in 10" he said. That is weird. I've not even met him. Everything I do is reported only to Fury.

"Yes sir" I said. This was not good. "Fury are you online?" I asked through the com. No response. I took out my phone and called him. Again no response.

Something is up. I made my way to the elevator. "Senior head's office" I said." Confirmed" the A.I said and the elevator moved up.

Why in the world does Pierce wants to meet me? He is the senior head of SHIELD but everything stays with the Director Nick Fury.

The elevator stopped and I moved out and walked towards the Head's office. I stood in front of it.

"Okay let's do this" I whispered and knocked the door. "Come in" I heard him. I opened the door and entered in.

"Dr.Booth, it's an honour" he said standing from his chair and walked towards me. He put out his hand.

"Honour's all mine sir" I said taking his hand. We both walked towards his table. "Please take your seat" he said and I did. He sat down in his chair.

"I must appreciate your work in the Project. It's excellent." He said. "Thank you. Sir" I said. "Now as a Head of SHIELD and as a Member of the World Security Council, I am asked to report on the project to the council." He said. I knew where he was going.

"As you are a part of the project and being the Head in the defence systems, I want you to present the report to the Council" he said. Just as expected.

"But sir, I've submitted all days reports to the Director. He is the one overseeing the project. It must be him" I said.

"Your Director is pretty occupied. I want you to do it" he said with a tint of stubbornness in his voice. I didn't say anything.

"Now you will have a flight arranged to London in an hour" he said looking at his watch.

"In an hour?" I asked in disbelief. "Yes, in an hour. The Council wants the report as soon as possible" he said. "Yes sir" I responded. "Thank you for your co operation Doctor" he said smiling.

I gave him a half smile and stood up from my place. I turned and walked out of the room. This definitely didn't feel good. I took my phone and dialled Nick again.

"Come on Nick!" I said but no. He didn't take his phone. I hope that nothing goes wrong.

I was on my way to the airport many questions hanging in my head. Why are they sending me in such a hurry? Where is Nick? And why the hell are they sending me in a public flight when SHIELD has so many private planes and quinjets.

I must inform this to someone. I couldn't call Nat because she was also inside SHIELD and under Pierce. I cannot make her spy SHIELD with Fury not around. Only one name popped in my head. I took my phone and called him.

Steve's POV

I was walking to up to my appartment when I saw my neighbour Kate talking in phone as she goes to do her laundry. She looks me and hangs the phone.

"My aunt, she's kind of an insomniac" I smiled at her. Suddenly my phone started to ring I took out to see it was Ronnie calling. That's new.

"Is it your girlfriend?" Kate asked. "What makes you say that?" I asked her. "The spark. In your eyes. As soon as you see her name" she said.I smiled.

"Go on talk...Oh.and by the way you left your stereo on" she said. "Oh. Right, thank you" I said she walks away as I attend Ronnie's call.

"Ronnie?" I asked." Steve listen to me carefully. I am off to London right now" she said hurriedly.

"Now? What for?" I asked. "Something about meeting security council. Look...something is up. I was said to board this flight and hour before. And I've been trying to call Fury but he just doesn't respond" she said.

"You think something is gonna happen?" I asked her. "No...I am pretty sure something has already happened. And SHIELD sending me in a public flight is ticking every box of doubt for me. I just wanted to warn you. Anything might happen" she said.

"But Ronnie...why do they want you out of here?" I asked. "Heaven knows. Look if something happens....anything happens call me immediately. No matter whatever it is. Alright?" She asked.

"Yeah..and Ronnie....be careful" I said. "You too Steve" she said. "See you soon, bye" she said.

"Bye" I replied and she hanged the phone. That was Ronnie full in worried voice. She was panicking. She usually remains calm and this is not good.

Suddenly I remembered what Kate said. I didn't leave my stereo on. I looked at my door suspicious. I tried the window.

I hear the music and cautiously enter into my apartment through the window. I grab my shield for protection and turn around the kitchen into the living room.

I see a figure sitting and near it only to find it was Fury, in the dark. "I don't remember giving you a key" I said.

"You really think I'd need one? My wife kicked me out" he said. "Didn't know you were married" I replied. "A lot of things you don't know about me" he said.

"I know Nick. That's the problem" I said and put on the light to notice his injuries. But he indicates me to remain silent and he turns off the light.

He texts something on his phone. "Ears everywhere" he showed me." I'm sorry to have to do this, but I had no place else to crash" he said and writes another text. "SHIELD'S Compromised" it said. Ronnie was right.

"Who else knows about your wife?" I asked indirectly. "You and me" He wrote. "Just..friends" he said.

"You know, I met one of your friends, he is in London" I said referring to Ronnie. "Oh..yeah. You should meet again. He does a lot of help" he said indicating to get help from Ronnie.

"Do you know why he shifted to London?" I asked him indirectly again. "No idea" he said and again wrote something. "Her powers" it said.

So they send Ronnie so that she could not stop them. They know she will be the upper hand with her world wide status. More over she has powers. They are scared of her.

Suddenly three shots are fired through the wall at Fury and collapses on the ground. I look out at the window and drag Fury to the next room. I look at the shooter through the window and go to follow him when Fury stops me.

He hands me a flash drive. "Don't...trust anyone. Get Booth" he said and fainted. I heard someone breaking in. "Captain, I'm Agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service" I saw Kate.

"Kate?" I asked confused. "I'm assigned to protect you" she said. "On whose orders?" I asked. She notices Fury lying injured on the floor. "His" she said.

She comes near Fury when I stood and looked through the window. "Foxtrot is down. He's unresponsive. I need EMTs" she said.

"Do you have a twenty on the shooter?" The agent asked . I noticed the shooter. "Tell him I'm in pursuit" I said. I smash through the window and run after the assassin. I chase him through an office building, smashing through walls when I finally catch up with him on a roof.

I throw my shield at him, but he catches it with one swift move and then throws it back at me. But the time I catch the shield and look at him he disappeared.
