Chapter 22

Veronica POV

We all gathered around in the dining room. I sat near Nat on the table. Bruce and Steve were standing while Clint and Tony were playing darts.

"Ultron took you folks out of play to buy time himself. My contacts all say he's building something. The amount of Vibranium he made off with, I don't think its just one thing" Fury said.

"What about Ultron himself?" Steve asked crossing his arms. "Ah, he's easy to track, he's everywhere. Guy's manipulating faster than a Catholic Rabbit. Still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans though" Nick said.

"Is he still after the launch codes?" I asked. "Yes, he is, but he's not making any headway" he replied.

"I cracked the Pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare" Tony remarked.

"Yeah, well I contacted our friends at the NEXUS about that" Fury said. "NEXUS?" Steve questioned.

"It's the World internet hub in Oslo. Every byte of data flows through there, fastest access on Earth" Bruce explained.

"So, what'd they say?" Clint asked. "He's fixated on the missiles. But the codes are constantly being changed" Nick said.

"That's actually good. But by whom?" I asked. "Parties unknown" Nick replied. "We have an ally?" Nat asked.

"Ultron's got an enemy. That's not the same thing. Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is" Nick said.

"I might need to visit Oslo. To find our 'Unknown'" Tony offered. "Well, this is good times, Boss. But I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that" Nat said unimpressed.

"I do. I have you." He looked at all of us. "Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere, ears everywhere else, you kids had all the tech you could dream of" he came and stood in the middle of the table.

"Here we all are, back on Earth, with nothing but our wit and our will to save the World. Ultron says the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission. And whether or not he admits it, his mission is Global Destruction. All this laid in a grave. So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard" Nick said.

"Steve doesn't like that kind of talk" Nat joked. "You know what, Romanoff..." he started. I smiled at him

"So what does he want?" Fury asked. "To become better. Better than us" I said.

"He keeps building bodies" Steve added. "Person bodies" Tony said. "The human form is inefficient. Biologically speaking, we're outmoded. But he keeps coming back" he finished.

"When you programmed him to protect the human race, you amazingly failed" Nat commented.

"They don't need to be protected" Bruce said for  behind looking at the drawing Lila gave Nat.

"They need to evolve. Ultron's gonna evolve" he added. "How?" Fury asked. "Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?" Bruce asked.

"I'll take Natasha, Clint and Ronnie" Steve said. Tony nodded. We were all suited up to face Ultron again.

"Alright. Strictly Recon . I'll hit the NEXUS. I'll join you as soon as I can" Tony said.

"If Ultron's really building a body-"

"He'll be more powerful than any of us. Maybe all of us. An Android designed by a robot" Tony said.

"You know, I really miss the days where the weirdest thing science ever created was me" Steve said.

"I'll drop Banner off at the tower. You mind if I borrow Me. Hill?" Nick asked putting his coat on.
