-Blake-

I waited outside the big, cream white door of Tessa's house, my heart thumping inside my chest.
I really hope she answers...

Just as I was loosing hope and was about to walk away, I heard the door creak open and I turned around to see Tessa looking at me in pure surprise.

"Hey Tess," I grinned, feeling amused at her expression.

"Blake?" She replied, her eyes still wide.

I extended my hand to hers hesitantly and searched her eyes, "I thought I'd check on you because yesterday you seemed upset... Do you still not want to tell me why you were upset?"

Tessa shrugged and shook her head dismissively, "It's just that I miss my family..." Her voice trailed off and she cleared her throat. "With my mum away for work, leaving my aunt to look after me, and my dad — gone — I've been feeling not the best for the past couple of days."

I nodded and gripped her hand encouragingly.

Sometimes you give more comfort in the actions you do than the words you say.

Hours later I was about to go outside for lunchtime, when an arm pulled me aside.

"Hey—" I yelled, then turned around to see Oscar, with a worried expression on his face. "Oscar. What's up?"

Oscar's eyes darted around the place and I had never seen someone who was always nonchalant ever look so stressed.

"Oscar!" I repeated firmly with a tinge of worry on the edge of my voice. "What's wrong?" I laughed nervously: "You're scaring me now..."

"It's Tessa." He whispered and I froze, my mind now suddenly alert. "I heard her talking on the phone—"

I raised my eyebrows slightly, "You heard her or you eavesdropped on her?"

"Does it really matter?" Oscar snapped in reply. "Sh-she was talking about you."

"Talking about me to who?"

"I don't know but she was talking about the party - your party."

I shrugged: so what?

But Oscar wasn't finished talking just yet.

"She's planning to get you alone in the party and poison you. She wants to kill you Blake." Oscar hurriedly blurted out.

I stared at him in disbelief and placed my hand on his shoulder, "And why would she be planning that?"

"I don't know - I had a feeling she could sense I was there so I ran away to make sure I wasn't spotted..."

I shook my head firmly, "You must have misheard her."

Oscar's face contorted in suppressed rage, "I didn't! How could I mistake something as serious as this?"

I stepped forward but he backed away - he was getting worried about nothing, "Has Tessa ever struck you as untrustworthy or suspicious in any way as far as we've known her?"

Before he replied, he exhaled a shuddered breath and leaned against the wall, not noticing the fire alarm button by his elbow.

Once he pushed his elbow back to lean against the wall, he accidentally pressed the button and immediately, sirens erupted through the corridors of our school.

Oscar closed his eyes and winced as students hurried outside and the fire brigade arrived at our school gates.

He really was an idiot.
