The little, baby girl's laughter filled the room as her mother tickled her under the chin.
The mother turned as the door suddenly creaked opened, and a man with ash coloured hair and a long scar on his cheek entered the room.
The mother looked up, "Marshall. I didn't know you were in town.""I'm here to talk about our agreement." Marshall replied. His tone was always cold and emotionless. "Where is your husband George?"
The mother shivered and stood up to turn the heater on as she said: "He's just out food shopping and—" She paused, mulling over her words carefully. "What agreement?"
"Don't bother pretending - you know what agreement I mean," Marshall now had a stern edge to his voice. He spoke in a hissing, warning tone, almost as if he was a predator, waiting for it's prey. "You signed a contract three years ago just after you had married, saying that any of your future children will work for me."
"I —" the Mother paused, whispering almost inaudibly. "Well, I don't think I want to be part of that contract anymore."
Marshall stepped closer staring intimidatingly into the Mother's eyes, "You can not break the contract, it's not possible." He smirked at her, his tone now playfully provoking like a small child. "I don't think you looked close enough at the fine print."
The mother shrunk back and inclined her head so that she didn't have to look into Marshall's intense eyes, "When will she have to start working for you?"
He smiled a lopsided grin as he replied, "When she is ten years old. I have big plans for this child, she will be a great undercover agent."
The mother stood up, raw fear displayed on her face, "Ten years old?! It will be too dangerous. I can't allow it. Surely, can't you give me more work and let her start later in her life?"
"NO. And that's final," Marshall reached a fist dangerously close to her face and the mother backed away. She knew it would be best for her to agree when potential violence from Marshall was involved.
"Ok," She whispered, tears stinging her eyes.
"Good."
Marshall turned away and was about to leave when he stopped: "By the way, what is the baby's name?"
"Olivia," The mother replied. "Her name's Olivia."
Marshall nodded curtly and left the room, leaving the mother alone.
It was only then, that she allowed her welling tears to fall.————
