I arrived at my new school just on time— verging on lateness— but I was unable to see Blake anywhere.
My new school was moderately small but it had a separate building called the 'Extension wing'. It was also accompanied by a field where, I was told, our P.E lessons would be situated.
I walked into my new form class and the teacher greeted me, introducing me to the rest of the class.
"Morning students!" She beamed. "This is your new classmate Tessa Wilson. Please make sure that you treat her nicely because I'm sure it must feel very overwhelming to join a new school."
Everyone groaned and I laughed:
I am so used to this.Just before she carried on speaking, Blake finally rushed into the classroom, his hair, drooping all over his flustered face, in a mess.
My new form teacher looked at Blake with a slight regard of distaste, "Blake Evans. Why are you late? You know very well that punctuality is required when you're in my classroom."
Blake gave a feeble, apologetic smile and said, "Sorry miss, my alarm clock didn't ring - you know how it is."
She raised her eyebrows, "No. I don't think I do."
The whole class erupted with oooohhhs.
She put her hands on her hips, "Well, since you're standing up and you are late, would you mind showing Tessa around the school?"
My eyes slightly widened at the mention of my name and Blake eyed me, nodding his head.
"Sure," Blake replied, motioning his hand to the door for me to leave first. "Definitely."
We walked out of the classroom and stood still for a few seconds in painful, awkward silence, leaving me to want to be anywhere but there in that moment.
"So…" Blake started."It's nice seeing you again!"
"Really?" I laughed forcefully in disbelief.
"Well yeah," He shrugged lightly. "I didn't know you were going to start coming to my school."
"Life has many surprises," I deadpanned sarcastically.
There was a moment of silence before we both burst into laughter.
After the spurt of laughter had lessened, Blake said: "Darn, I just remembered I'm actually supposed to be showing you around this place."
He face-palmed his face and ran his hands through his dark brown hair.Blake then lead the way through the corridors, telling me about the school history and different classrooms but I stopped listening completely, after the first fact: "The school used to have two quarters where girls and boys were each taught separately, then in 1955 the school modernised into a mixed school..."
I sighed, suddenly feeling sad and I didn't know why.
He must have seen my upset face because he stopped walking.
"Hey..." Blake turned around and stared right into my eyes, looking concerned. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Tessa..."
I winced subconsciously at the sound of my undercover name but luckily he didn't seem to notice.
"I know that it's probably hard starting a new school, but I promise you'll have me as a friend here," He smiled. "—Although, I hope I'm not being too boring for you; our school's historical facts can get a little dreary after a while!"
I grinned back at his attempt of trying to make me feel better and shook off the unsettling feeling out of my stomach.
But I also shook off the fact that was troubling me the most: The Batrachotoxin poison in my bag was still left untouched.
