After everyone had finished hugging Blake and Harper, wiping away their delighted tears of relief, we let them sit down, as one of the paramedics assessed Blake's leg.
"I'm fine, honestly." Blake insisted, dismissing the paramedic's protests.
But I could see his face becoming very pale.
She lifted up his trouser leg, to see a large gash that was dripping with blood.
I gasped in shock: "Blake! What happened?"
He gritted his teeth as the nurse cleansed his wound.
The medic shook her head, "This cut is too deep for me to deal with here, so we'll need to take you to the hospital, to give you stitches."
Blake nodded slowly in reply and I noticed how drained he looked.
His mum took his hand, "What happened in there?"
Blake took a deep breath, "Well, just as you guys escaped out of the building Harper and I were seconds away from joining you but then she tripped." He turned his head to his sister gripping tightly to his arm as if her life depended on it.
"Then, suddenly, Marshall staggered in front of us, and blocked our way, with a gun in his hand. I grabbed Harper and shielded her as much as I could while Marshall shot at us - luckily his aim was off and the bullet only grazed my leg..."
Aiden sucked in a sharp breath.
"We were going to try and escape one last time but we were too late," Blake paused and looked at me for a split second. "Just as the bomb exploded, we took cover underneath a table and braced ourselves."
"I was so scared..." Harper whispered, her voice on sounding like she was on the verge of tears.
I placed my hand on her shoulder and she smiled slightly at me.
"You are one of the bravest people I know." I reassured her.
Then Blake continued: "Thank goodness only part of the ceiling caved in and we weren't seriously injured, but that meant that it was hard to get out of the remains of the building because the entrance was blocked." Blake looked down. "It was scary being trapped inside, but we kept hope until we were rescued by the fire department."
I shook my head in awe and took his hand, "You are both so brave."
Blake smiled and gently touched my cheek, "That's because you inspire me to be, Liv."
