Ch. 15

When I saw the look on Dee's face, then realized her & Joe knew each other, I was confused. I looked at Dee for a clue, but all I saw was worry on her face. Why was she worried about seeing Joe? Then he called her Demi. That's when it hit me. That was the girl's name in Mexico that he wouldn't shut up about. The one night stand that never showed the next day. I needed a drink. I excused myself to get us some drinks. On my way back, I saw the look on Joe's face as he looked at Dee. He still had feelings for her. Suddenly, it hit me. The one night stand while the guy was on vacation. Joe is Damon's father. I felt ill for a moment as I handed Dee her drink.

"Come on, I want you to meet me family." I said, taking Dee's hand & getting her away from Joe as fast as I could. I introduced her to my family, then she excused herself to go to the restroom. I let her go, then I followed her. Just as she reached the hall where the bathroom was, I grabbed her arm. "Hey, so you & Joe hooked up in Mexico."

Dee bit her lip. "Yea." She looked down at the floor.

"He's Damon's dad isn't he?" I asked in a whisper.

Dee nodded. "Please don't tell him about Damon. I don't want anyone to know I even have a kid yet."

"Dee, he deserves to know he's a father."

"I will tell him. I just can't tell him at his engagement party, Nick." She pulled her arm from me & headed to the bathroom. I went back into the party & headed to the bar. I caught a glare from Joe a few times as I talked to Chloe's friends.

I never thought it would ever come to me, hitting my brother, but he pushed my buttons, later, when we were outside. I wanted to hit him so bad, but I heard Dee tell me not to. I was angry that she was defending him, but then I knew if I hit him, I was going to hurt him. I was trained to do severe damage with my fists. I wanted to catch Dee before she climbed into the car. It was her car, actually & her friend, Marissa, was driving. Marissa had gotten into town that morning to visit her family & was staying at Dee's house some of the time she was here. I decided to go back into the party, so I wouldn't upset my parents by taking off.

Throughout the party, Joe & I would exchange some cold stares. At one point, Chloe came over to me, since she sensed something was off with me & my brother.

"What the hell happened with you & Joe?" She asked.

I took a deep breath. "He didn't tell you?" I asked. Chloe shook her head, looking confused. "Did you see the girl I came in with?"

"Yea." Chloe nodded. "That was Dee, right?"

"Yea. Except she knows Joe from a few years ago. Did he ever tell you about Demi? The girl he met in Mexico?"

"Yea, when I found pictures of her that he got printed out a few months ago."

I shook my head & a little laugh. "Of course he got pictures of her printed. He told me he had found the memory card. I had forgotten he had mentioned that a while ago. Well, I hate to break it to ya, Chloe, but Dee is Demi. Demi is Dee."

Chloe stared at me like I had three heads. "Are you serious? That girl was Demi?" Chloe crossed her arms & looked annoyed. "No wonder Joe was acting strange. Should I be worried, Nick?"

I shrugged my shoulders. "He'd be stupid if he let a one night stand from three years ago come between what you & him have together. Besides, Dee is my girlfriend now. Well, she was... & I am going to go make sure she knows that this changes nothing. I still want to be with her."

Chloe gave me a smile. "Wow. I never thought you'd fall for someone again. You were hurt pretty bad from what Joe told me, which is why you're such a player now." She smirked & laughed.
