Ch. 45

Nick POV

It had been three days since our ordeal with Jesse & still Demi hadn't spoken. She either laid in bed, staring at the ceiling or she sat up in a chair, staring at the tv, even if it wasn't on. She moved once in a while, but was pretty still most of the time. The doctors were doing everything they could possibly do to get her to speak, but nothing was working. One of her doctors said she was in a state of shock & that it was just a way for her body to protect her from the traumatic event. It wasn't technically a catatonic state but more of a stupor & there wasn't any physical reason she should be this way. We just had to wait, since this was mental & not physical.

Since Demi was allegedly raped, she was taken care of, with kid gloves, when she got to the hospital. She was given a rape kit & a morning after pill, thank God. They went by what we told them, since Demi wasn't speaking to anyone. No one would tell me any results from her kit, so I'd have to wait to hear anything when Demi spoke again. The nurse that was with her during her examination when she first arrived at the hospital said that Demi didn't speak the whole time, so they weren't able to get any questions answered.

While Demi was in the hospital, I didn't leave her side. Joe brought me clothes & things that I needed, so I had no reason to leave, really. I wanted to keep talking to Demi, trying to get her to speak. I talked to her about anything & everything, even if she didn't respond. I played my guitar & sang to her, but still nothing. I read to her & that did nothing either. I wasn't giving up, though.

I told Joe to bring Damon up on the third day, hoping he would help Demi to snap out of this. He was dying to see Demi as well, since it had been days. He didn't understand anything except that he missed his mommy.

"Damon's coming to see you today, baby." I said to Demi as I brushed her hair. Jules had brought clothes for Demi & I had managed to get her dressed in them. I looked into Demi's eyes, hoping to see something. Anything. I was disappointed when I saw nothing. It was as if the light in her eyes had burned out. There was no life in her gaze, just a blank stare. I sighed, then kissed her cheek before I sat down beside her. "I love you." I said to her as I held her hand. Nothing. No response. Not even a lip twitch or an eye movement.

Joe got there with Damon about twenty minutes later & Damon ran to Demi & hugged her. "Mommy!" He exclaimed, climbing onto her lap. Joe went to get him & I put my arm up to stop him. I didn't want Joe to prevent Damon from doing anything. I wanted Damon to do whatever he wanted, hoping something would bring Demi back to us. Damon sat on Demi's lap, cuddling up against her chest & patting her beside his face. His big brown eyes looked up at her with such adoration & confusion that it broke your heart. He was wondering why Demi wasn't hugging him back or kissing him or telling him she loved him. It was hard to watch for both Joe & I. After a few minutes, Damon looked over at Joe & stuck his little lip out. "Daddy? What wong wif Mommy?"

"She's sick, buddy. And very tired, but your hugs might just make her feel better." Joe answered him, sighing when he finished speaking. We were both hoping that was a true statement.

Damon's face scrunched up as he looked at Demi, then he smiled & laid his head on her chest again, his arms stretched out to hug her. Joe sighed again, then shook his head as he looked down at the floor. "So, Greg cancelled the appearances you had scheduled for the next week. He said to let him know about the ones, after that, over the next few weeks."

I nodded. "Thanks."

"He has a whole bunch of shit lined up for you, especially, after the holidays man. He showed me some of it when he stopped by the house to give me my check. Since he hired me as your official photographer, we'll be busy after the new year. For quite a while it looks like. I think by this time next year, you're gonna need bodyguards." Joe chuckled.
