''Mide, I can't deny it, been a senior is a thrilling experience".
I turned to her, my expression mirrored hers. "Its a thrilling experience, but not as thrilling as yours".
The side of her lips turned up, and she faked a cough. "Not as thrilling as mine, I don't understand you".
I hit her head lightly, with the geography textbook I was reading, "Don't play dumb, I know how you are enforcing your— what should I call it.... Seniority on those junior students".
"Me? " She screamed with mock surprise.
I eyed her, my attention on the textbook completely gone, "You are a drama queen, I won't waste my time on you".
"If you say another lie, I'll hit your head, Jessie" Habiba's voice could not be mistaken. She was approaching our desk.
Jessie, stood up, immediately habiba reached our desk (and flung her bag expertly on the chair in front of me) and folded her arms, though habiba, is slightly taller than her, she still managed to perform her act.
With her arms folded, she eyed habiba with such an uncanny speed, that only habiba had.
The realization hit me, and my eyes met Habiba's before I spanked Jessie.
"Ooww" she clasped her butt and glared at me.
"That's really cool" habiba commented and sat on the seat she had flung her bag to. The thing is Jessie, was actually imitating Habiba, whenever she is pissed off. Jessie totally aced that act, it was so real and painful exact.
Jessie stuck her tongue out, at habiba. I sighed, the two of them needed a demotion to primary one.
Habiba Yusuf, is our newest friend since we resumed senior secondary two. She was a typical Hausa girl, with long and dark hair, and oval shaped eyes.
She and her family of five, has been residing in this state, since she was born. Her claim, was she had changed schools more than her mother has changed diapers.
"What are we even having today" she turned to me, but her eyes were on Jessie who was unwrapping a lollipop.
"Greedy soul" I mocked, then turned opened the last page of my exercise book, where I had written the time table, then frowned. "Why are you even asking me, am in commercial?".
Habiba's mouth formed a small 'oh'. "Sorry".
"Mide, don't mind her" Jessie stressed, she had removed the lollipop from her mouth and was twirling it with glee "Her conversation with Ahmed, is still affecting her".
Habiba's response to this, was a Cheshire smile. This girl, was totally smitten.
When habiba had resumed newly, an unfortunate event occurred and she misplaced her school map. She was stranded in the hallway and was contemplating going back home, admittedly our school was fairly large, and the school map, was the surest way to get to any destination quickly, if you are unfamiliar with the environment.
It was in that state, stranded with no idea of how to even exit the school building that Ahmed had found her. She claimed, she was muttering some words in Hausa.
Though I did not like, Ahmed much (after our incident at the c-bend and some few more in class), I could to an extent understand why she was smitten with.
Ahmed, is not the typical Hausa guy, he is dark in complexion and very tall. Granted that he is handsome, his features looked more like an Igbo guy, than Hausa.
If I am to cut, Habiba and Ahmed's tale of love, it would mean that I skipped Habiba's numerous fantasy and went to where he helped her, discovered she spoke hausa and was one of the new students to be admitted in his class.
Unlike Jessie, I wouldn't call it, love at first sight, i'd call it mutual liking. After all, habiba is a sight to behold, with her unusual fair complexion and small lips.
"I did not say it, so you can smile, smitten kitten" Jessie prodded with a tiny smile. We were all used to it, by us, I meant everyone in the class, any form of teasing about their behavior towards one another had a permanent response of a smile or an eye roll.
The eye roll, is mostly on Ahmed's part."I think on Saturday, we should go to that new eatery around in third lane, I really want to try their strawberry flavoured ice-cream"
Trust habiba, to always suggest one thing or the other, during the weekend, there was no full stop for her craving for sweet things.
"Yeah," I nodded, "maybe in the evening".
We turned to Jessie, who hadn't said a word since habiba's suggestion.
"I don't want ice cream" she pouted.
It couldn't even help it, I burst into laughter. That was a flimsy lie, Jessie absolutely loved ice-cream
"Jessie" Habiba warned with a sour smile, her hands on my other textbook "I am going to hit your head, with this biology textbook".
Jessie's eye widened like saucer, "of course, am joking, why would I resist an offer of buying and licking ice cream, but if you hit me with that biology textbook, I doubt if I will survive".
We had good laugh after her statement. I agreed with her, our biology textbook is heavier than metal.
