Chapter 2

Lexi's POV

Man, that's one night that will haunt me for the rest of my life. I don't know what happened between him and Peter - that's my father's name - but Jake sure as hell made it very clear that Peter was not to see me again. Unfortunately there was nothing he could do about today because as far as I know Peter was still married to my mom. Thankfully Jake and I were already 18 so we didn't have to depend on or move in with my father.

But now, I was freaking out. Big time. I was gonna have to be in the same room as him. All through he would be standing just a few meters from me.

All four of us went down together. And as soon as we reached the last step, my eyes scanned the room for two people - one who I intend on staying far away from and one whose comfort I longed for - my father and the other Ryan. But I was disappointed both ways, because first, I couldn't spot Ryan anywhere and second, my father was making his way towards me and Jake.

As soon as I saw him I moved behind Jake and held onto his arm as tightly as I could. Seemed like Jake spotted him at the same time because he got his arm around me and pushed me behind him like as if he was shielding me.

By this time, Peter was standing in front of us with a smile plastered on his face. No, I did not make a mistake there. He really was smiling. Now that just made me hate him more.

"Hey kids!" he said cheerfully.

"Don't call us that. You don't deserve it." Jake said in a low voice.

You know what my dad did? He laughed. He laughed out loud.At a funeral. My mom's funeral. His wife's funeral.

"Oh Jake.. look at you trying to act all grown up.... Don't even think you can tell me what to do and what not to do, young man." We waited for him to continue," And Lexi my darling," I flinched when I heard him call my name." We never got to finish what we started that evening..maybe one of these days- "

"Don't even dare to say the words " Jake said using the same tone he used before.

"Oh please..." he said sarcastically.

"Listen..?" Jake started. "How about you just stay away from me and Lexi..?I mean you can stay until the ceremony is over but after that I want you to leave. I will not have a man as cheap as you under my roof for long. Is that clear? " By the time he finished his tone was menacing.

"Your roof?...yeah, your roof. " Peter scoffed.

"Yes my roof. In case you forgot, this house belonged to mom, and she left it for us so that makes it our house now. And I have every right to kick you out right now." With that Jake turned and started walking so I followed suit. But before I could take more than two steps I was stopped.By my father. His hand was on my arm.

I could feel my heart thudding in my chest. My palms were getting sweaty and I was sure that if his hand was in contact with my skin for even a minute more I would faint. But before I could let that happen, I was pulled away by someone and pushed into someone else's hands. It was Jake who pushed me into Haley's hands. She held me tight as I started to cry. Even though she was the same age as me, she always felt older and I looked at her like an elder sister.

Although it was that only that one night, it made a huge impact in my life. I will never ever be able to forget the look that was in his eyes that night. Even the thought of it made me shiver.

I was so lost in thought that I didn't realise Jake was in front of me until he called out my name.

"Lex! Lexi!" he snapped his fingers in front of my eyes.

"Huh?!" I shook up.

"Are you okay? " He asked with concern lacing his features.

I just stood there looking at his face for a minute before moving forward and hugging him tightly. He hugged me back with the same amount of force. After some time he pulled away.

"Where is he?" I asked with a shaky voice.

" I told him to leave." he replied. "Do you want to go rest for a while?"

I didn't trust my voice so I just nodded." But I don't want to be alone."

Before he could say anything, Haley cut in,

" I'll go with her. " she said.

Jake nodded while giving her a grateful look. I knew he was worried about me and wanted to come upstairs instead of Haley but he had to stay down because of the guests that had come.

Jake had finally convinced me to go to school with him. And now, I was sitting in the passenger seat of Jake's car, debating whether or not to go inside. I was scared to face eyeryone in school, I didn't want to be made fun of just because I lost my mom. It was creepy. Coming to Ryan, I didn't know what to make of our relationship at this point. He didn't come for the funeral and to make things worse, he didn't even send me a text.

"Lexi...don't let those people keep you from going to school and attending classes. Who knows they might treat you like nothing ever happened." Jake said in an exasperated voice. Well I wouldn't blame him, I mean we have been sitting in the car from the past 10 minutes.

" Fine, I'll go." I finally gave in.

We got out of the car and walked towards the school building. And turned out Jake was right. None of the students gave me weird looks and they didn't start whispering behind my back. Infact they were all smiles and greeted me cheerfully. I tried to smile back at as many people as possible, cause that's what I decided to do..try to get back to my old self.

Jake went off to meet his friends but not before making sure that I would be alright. As soon as I entered the building, I heard Chrystal call out to me. As I turned I noticed that Riley was also with her.

We hugged each other and as I pulled away I asked them,

"Hey, did y'all see Ryan anywhere?"

They just looked at me and shrugged. I guess I'll have to wait till class to meet him unless he meets me at my locker or something. I was acting like it was fine but this - his behaviour - was really bothering me.

Anyway the three of us kept talking to eachother about nothing in particular when I felt something - or rather someone - bump into my shoulder.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.." I heard a voice say from behind me.

I turned around and stared into a pair of piercing green eyes.

"I'm sorry" he said again while bending down to pick up his books from the floor.

"It's okay, no problem" I said with a smile.

He stood up and offered his hand to me "I'm Colton, Colton Williams."

"Lexi Evans" I said shaking his hand." I haven't seen you around before, are you new?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Yeah, I just got in three days back" he said " Anyway, I've gotta go, I'll see you around?"

"Sure, see ya."

I turned around again to find both my friends staring at me with their mouth's hanging open.

"What?"I asked them

"Nothing, nothing." They said immediately closing their mouths.

We walked to my locker and while I was collecting my stuff, I heard someone come and stand behind me.

"We need to talk."
