Chapter 45
After a while of crying, I began to look up at the bodies before seeing Caroline's lifeless body laying among the pile of walkers and I began to shed my last few tears before looking at my rifle and wiping my tears. I heard Carol leave not a few moments after I killed Caroline and right now, everyone was quiet around me, not knowing what to say. I then slowly began to arise with my rifle in hand before turning around and instantly pointing it at Hershel.
"How long did you know she was in there?" I yelled, done playing games and wanted answers.
"Whoa, whoa, Skye. Calm down," Rick said.
"I am calm. Calm as the sea. But I know he knows something because there's no way she could have been in there and nobody would have known, so tell me, how long did you know?" I repeated again.
"I did know she was in there, I swear to you Skyler," Hershel said.
"You're lying! You've all been lying to me! You all knew, I know you did. All those times I went looking for her when this whole time she was in there. You asked me what I would do if Caroline was a walker and that can't be a coincidence. So tell me, how long did you know, huh? A few days?, a week?, over a week? How long have you known?" I yelled.
"Skye, I swear to you, we didn't know," Maggie said.
I then felt arms wrap around me and suddenly realized it was Daryl. He then slowly took the rifle out of my hands before I began to cry into his arms. I felt so upset that Caroline was dead and didn't know how to control it. I was supposed to find her, I didn't. I was supposed to be there for her, I didn't. I was supposed to see her get married, have children and grow old, and once again I didn't. Everything I was supposed to do for her was taken from me. She was taken from me.
Once I had cried for a while, I finally was released from Daryl's arms before I walked off to the house. On my way there, I spotted Helen standing behind Beth, who was currently crying into Jimmy's arms. I continued to walk towards her before saying...
"It's your fault, you know. Everything is your fault," I said.
After saying this, I continued to walk on before seeing Jason and Alicia crying on the porch. I knew they needed me but I couldn't be there for them, not now with the state I was in and so, I walked off and over to the tents before getting inside my tent. Once I did this, I instantly grabbed my backpack and took it out of the tent and over to the fireplace. I then began rummaging through it before getting out every single plan to find Caroline and burning them. I didn't need them anymore. She wasn't coming home and neither was Sophia. I felt so emotional that I could explode.
Just as I finished, I then began searching through my backpack, looking for anything else to burn before I spotted a locket at the bottom of the bag. I instantly grabbed it and opened it, seeing a family picture of us when we were little. This was the thing I was meant to give Caroline when I found her but now, there was no one to give it to. I immediately put it around my neck before putting my stuff back into my backpack and putting my backpack back in my tent.
Once I did this, I then began to wonder how to distract myself before I finally found the solution. It was darts with my knives. After realizing this, I then found the perfect tree far away from everyone else and began to throw knives at the tree. I continued to do this for a while before I saw Jason walking over to me. He had some kind of book in his hands, but I continued to throw knives, doing what I needed to do to stay strong.
"Skye? I-I have something for you. Caroline wanted to give it to you for your birthday, I just wanted to wait in case- well in case we found her," Jason said.
I didn't turn around. I just kept throw knives.
"Please Skye, don't shut me out. I know you are hurting but I really need my sister right now," Jason said.
I then stopped throwing knives and turned to see him before saying...
"I'm sorry. I failed you... and her," I said as tears began to roll down my cheeks.
"No you didn't. You didn't fail us," Jason said as he cried.
We then began to hold each other for a moment before he held out the book and said...
"Happy birthday," Jason said, trying to sound as happy as possible.
"Thank you," I said before taking the book and sitting down with him on the grass to look at it.
As I looked at it, I noticed it wasn't just any book. It was my photo album I made of Caroline and Jason as they grew up. I then added Alicia when she was born and it became the four of us. We had so many memories together as 'the three musketeers' with me as the fourth one.
"You kept it?" I questioned.
"We knew how much it meant to you. So, Caroline kept this, and I kept the motorbike," Jason said.
"Thank you," I said before smiling at him.
We then began looking through at the memories of us going away on holidays, going to the beach, eating ice cream and other memories. I smiled at Jason before I closed the book and took off Caroline's necklace.
"I kept this for her. I found it on her desk and remembered how much she loved it. She much have been in a rush if she forgot it," I said, showing Jason the necklace.
"Yeah she was. I remember her telling me how much she had regretted not bringing it with her," Jason said.
"She should have it. Before we bury her, she should have it," I said.
Jason nodded before all of a sudden, I saw Daryl walk over to us and say...
"We're ready," Daryl said.
I nodded before we got up, carrying my photo album and Caroline's locket, and headed over to the some trees, where four graves were dug. One was Sophia's, another Annette's, another Shawn's and the last one was Caroline's. I began to walk over and saw Caroline's body all wrapped up and in the grave. I then handed the photo album to Jason before walking over and placing the locket on her wrapped up body. Once I did this, I said my goodbyes before standing next to Jason and Daryl while Alicia went in Daryl's arms. He held her close while I began to cry just like everybody else did over each and every loss...
