Chapter 39

After some time had past, I suddenly awoke in one of the guest rooms where most of the group surrounded me. Hershel, Maggie and Patricia were attending to my wound and as I looked down, I noticed all of the blood. Despite all of the blood, I didn't feel much pain. I just felt weak. Too weak to do anything.

"Where is she?, where's Alicia?" I asked.

"Alicia's fine. She's in the other room with Daryl," Hershel answered.

"I need to see her," I said.

"Not like this you can't. Now, do you remember your blood type?" Hershel asked.

"B- B positive," I said.

"Anybody that type here?" Hershel asked everyone.

Most of them shook their head before I heard a voice say...

"I am," a voice said.

I looked over and saw it was Jason.

"Come on over here son," Hershel said.

"No. He can't," I said.

"It's okay Skye. I'll do this for you," Jason said.

I continued to look uncertain before I passed out once again. Waking up a few moments later, I felt the pain of the bullet being pulled out before they knocked me out with drugs and I continued to stay this way for a while...

After hours of sleeping, I finally awoke and saw that I was in the same room where I had my surgery before I spotted Helen sitting beside me asleep. My eyes began to widen as I struggled to tell whether this was real or not before I saw her hand placed over mine. I began to move her hand off before she awoke and began to look at me, silently scared of my reaction of seeing her here before she said...

"I know you don't want me here. Jason just didn't want you alone and I offered to check on you. Besides, I wanted to make sure you were okay," Helen said.

I didn't say anything to her before she said...

"I know that I have a lot to make up for, but I'd like to take care of you for now. You and your daughter," Helen said.

"I don't know if-" I said before Helen interrupted me.

"I saw them. I saw your scars," Helen said.

"How?" I asked.

"When you were in surgery, they had to make sure the bullet didn't go straight through. I covered them up for you. I'm so sorry Skyler," Helen said.

"Are you still with Gavin?" I asked.

"He's changed. I promise you this. I haven't seen him be the way he was since you left. Gavin is a changed man, I promise you this," Helen said.

"You see the thing with these promises is that you never stay true to your word. I don't know if I can trust you," I said.

"I understand that but I'd like to try if you'd let me," Helen said.

"I need time," I said.

"Okay," Helen said before getting up and heading to the door.

"Mum?" I called.

"Yeah?" she asked as she turned to see me.

"Can you bring Alicia in for me?" I asked.

"Of course," she answered before leaving me.

Moments had past before Alicia came running in and said...

"Mum!" Alicia exclaimed as she rushed over to my bed and sat down beside me.

"Alicia baby!" I exclaimed before I held her close and kissed her head.

"Careful there Ali," I heard someone say before I looked over and saw that it was Jason.

"How are you doing?" I asked him.

"Fine, you?" Jason asked.

"I'm okay," I answered as he sat down on a chair across the room.

As he did this, I focused my attention back onto Alicia before I said...

"So, what have you been up to today?" I asked her.

"Well, I've visited Carl today and then after that I played with Aunt Beth," Alicia answered.

"That sounds like fun. Have you seen Daryl?" I asked.

"Yeah, he's okay. He was worried about you, but I told him not to worry because you're a survivor," Alicia said.

"That's right. Now, have you had dinner yet?" I asked.

"Not yet. I wanted to wait till I could see you," Alicia answered.

"I think you should go get something to eat, don't you?" I asked.

"Yes mum," Alicia agreed before getting up and leaving the room.

"You should get something to eat as well," I said, turning to Jason.

"But I-" Jason said before I interrupted him.

"I'll be okay. I promise," I said.

Jason nodded before heading to the door and saying...

"You know, you risked your life today to find our sister. Caroline would have been proud," Jason said.

"Thank you," I said.

Jason smiled before leaving the room. However, just as he did this, I saw Maggie enter my room. She had a tray with dinner on it before placing it down on the side and climbing beside me on the bed. She began to rest her head on my shoulder before saying...

"I'm so glad you're okay," Maggie said.

"Me too," I said.

"Thought I should bring you some dinner as I assume you're starving," Maggie said.

"Thank you. Now, you know about my day, what about you? What did you do today?" I asked.

"Nothing special. Just work," Maggie answered.

"Does this work involve my Korean best friend?" I asked.

I felt Maggie move away from my shoulder and across the bed to face me.

"How did you-" Maggie began to ask before I interrupted her.

"Call it an instinct, besides I know both of you extremely well. You really didn't think I'd suspect anything?" I questioned.

"I guess we could have been more discrete about it," Maggie said.

"Yeah, I guess so. So, how's it going?" I asked.

"It's complicated. I like Glenn is just- daddy wouldn't go for it. Our situation is difficult," Maggie said.

"Hey, listen to your big sister. If you like Glenn then you should be with him. Forget about what dad says. I know that you feel conflicted about him but trust your gut. I want you to be happy sister. You deserve it," I said.

"Thank you Skye," Maggie said.

I smiled at her before I received my dinner and began to eat away with Maggie sitting across from me, catching me up on everything I had missed...
