The crickets chirped away as we made our way down the little dirt trail. I jumped at the occasional rustle in the bushes caused by a squirrel or some small animal like that. "I hate this." I stated as I looked around me with the flashlight."Can you stop. You're making me nervous." Xavier lowered my hand so the flashlight was pointed to the floor.
"Well that's great." The trail went on a little further before opening up to a clearing with a gigantic grey metal warehouse in the middle. Yellow tape lined the outside and branched off into the forest to the right.
The warehouse used to be a place where the school would sometimes hold dances - ones that I would never go to - before they got the budget to get a hall and abandoned it. Nobody really tried to buy it because they thought there was no use in having one so it was just left to sit and rust.
Xavier and I kept our flashlights pointed to the ground in hopes to not alert anybody that could be on patrol, and ducked under the yellow police tape.
"So, we go around the back to see if there is a possible back door and if there's not then we'll have to come back around and pray that nobody hears or spots us." I explained in a low voice before walking carefully around the big building.
"Did we ever think that someone could be inside?" Xavier questioned, making me stop in my place.
"Let's just hope that's not the case."
We reached the back without a problem and started searching for a door. Nothing. Xavier and I looked at each other knowing that we have to take a big risk. "Maybe there's one on the side." Xavier suggested hopefully but we both know that the gods aren't on our side tonight. We walked around the other side, finding there was no door, and made our way back around to the front to stand in front of the big rusted sliding door.
Xavier and I shared a look before he tried to open it slowly. A piercing cry came from the door with just one budge. "That definitely alerted somebody. Just open it a little more so we can slip in." He nodded and continued to push, both of us cringing when the cry came again.
I slipped through the space with Xavier behind me and quickly examined the room. There was nothing in it except for a single chair in the middle, and off to the left was a staircase heading down to a basement. I walked slowly over to the chair, trying not to make any loud noises because we already made enough of those.
The chair was a normal wooden chair, except the arms and front two legs looked like something was tied to it for a long time. "Were you here Addison?" I whispered as I ran my fingertips along the marks. I turned to look for Xavier to find him standing off to the side, staring at the wall.
"What is it?" I walked over to stand beside him. There were two red B's inside a circle in red. "Do you know what it means?"
"No." He said with a slight snap and turned around walking to the stairs. That was interesting. "We should go down. Maybe there's something-" The screech of the door echoed through the building as three flashlights shined and a mans shouting bounced off the walls.
"Hands up now!" A guy in police attire walked over to Xavier and I, pointing his gun. We put our hands up in surrender and the man pushed us down to our knees. Another one walked over with handcuffs and started on Xavier before another voice spoke up.
"Wait." A man that I definitely recognised came over and stood in front of us. "Sasha."
"Hey... Dad." He looked down at me with fury as he pulled me from my knees and started to pull me out of the warehouse and down the dirt trail. I'm guessing Xavier was behind me and probably in handcuffs. I was pushed into the back of a red and blue flashing police car as my dad walked around to the driver side and hoped in, slamming his door very aggressively.
I'll be lucky if I get out of this alive.
The tension was so thick all the way to the police station that it scared me. The only time I got into this much trouble was when Addison and I were caught spray painting a city wall. Dad definitely wasn't happy with both of us that night but it was worth it. Addison and I had taken a bus into the city on a school night and started to spray our beautiful bow and arrows onto the wall of a cafe next to the dumpsters. Luckily, the owner didn't press charges.
We pulled up to the station, and dad wasted no time in getting out, walking over to my side to drag me out and pull me into a interrogation room.
I ran my fingers over my tattoo as dad sat in the chair across from me, probably trying to figure a way to attack me without being charged with child abuse.
"Why would you go against me like that?" He asked, keeping his calm.
"I'm sorry." I replied.
"You're sorry? Sasha, you trespassed on a serious crime scene! You could be arrested right now for tampering with evidence! Why were you even there?" He started shouting.
"I was looking for something."
"What? What could you be looking for in a place like that."
"I don't know."
"You don't know? That's not going to cut it Sasha! How am I suppose to trust you when you lie to my face and go behind my back to a dangerous place?!" I stayed silent. "I know that you skip school; You can't expect me not to find out. Your grades are slipping and I'm starting to worry about you. How can I trust you that when you leave the house to go to school, you're not just going to go and do something illegal? How do you think your mother would react to this?!" More silence. "I'm putting in a rule. You no longer have the luxury of leaving the house without adult supervision whilst the investigation is going on."
"What?!" My eyes shot up to look into his enraged ones.
"I'm going to drive you to and from school everyday. If you want to go out with your friends you'll have to tell them our new arrangement. The only person allowed to visit you will be Patrick because I trust him."
"Do you trust Addison?" His expression faulted for a second before going back to the way it was.
"If she comes back, maybe."
"'If'? 'Maybe'? What's that suppose to mean?" He got out of his chair and started walking towards the door, not looking back.
"We're done with this conversation Sasha. I'll be back in a few minutes and then we're going home. I'm very disappointed with you." And with that, he just left.
How am I going to get anywhere with my investigation. Who knows when the one at the warehouse will be finished, Addison could be far far away by then. I'll just have to find a loophole.
I'm going to find my best friend, even if my dad is in the way.
