The next month was relatively peaceful and went by fast. I had my weekly counseling sessions that Haruhi and I attended and school was basically normal again. More and more I felt myself starting to smile naturally and not force it so that my friends and family don't think i'm going to relapse. I became happier and enjoyed life.
Then, that news hit me like a truck.
After another session with my counselor, who was pleased at my quick recovery. What they told me actually worked. Once I stopped trying to deny the pain, I stopped feeling any grief to what had happened to me. As we left the building and we prepared to elk home to Haruhi's house she turned and faced me. "Mayuri...I have something to tell you," She said.
The way Haruhi put it, it didn't sound like good news. "What is it?" I asked her.
"Recently, I got accepted to a Study Abroad program...in Boston," She stated.
"Haruhi, that's great!" I squealed as I hugged her. "Why did you make it sound so bad? You're leaving when this school year ends, right?"
"...actually that's the bad news," Haruhi rubbed the back of her head nervously. "You see, the school year in the United States starts in a few months, but I wanted to transfer in as soon as possible so I can get used to the lifestyle in Boston. So...I'm leaving when first-term final exams are over."
My face fell. "That's...in a few weeks," I whispered. "How long have you known about this?"
"For a few weeks," Haruhi admitted. "I just...couldn't bring myself to say it to you."
We continued walking, but my face was darkened. Haruhi leaned forward and tried to make eye contact with me. "...Mayuri...?" She asked. "Are you alright? I didn't want to tell you about this because I didn't want to upset you and send you back into your depressive state."
"Are you kidding me?" I told her as I turned myself so I was in front of her and placed my hands on her shoulders and looked at her in the eye. "I'm so happy for you!" I smiled. "You're going to study abroad out of the country! I'm not upset, Haruhi. This is an opportunity of a lifetime."
"R-Really?" Haruhi stammered. "Thanks for understanding, Mayuri."
"Of course, Haruhi," I giggled as we arrived in front of her apartment building.
As Haruhi was about to enter the building, she stopped herself and turned to face me. "Oh yeah, before I forget," Haruhi came back down from the step and opened her book bag, pulling out an envelope and handing it to me. "This is your invitation to a goodbye party. It's a masquerade ball. I hope you come."
"Of course," I smiled as I stared at the invitation in my hands before looking back up at her. "I'd never miss it."
"Thanks!" Haruhi smiled as she climbed back up the stairs. "Goodbye!"
"Bye!" I waved goodbye at Haruhi before dropping my arm and frowning slightly, a stray tear rolling down my cheek.
God, never in my life has it been so painful to tell a lie.
