...
Rose sat on the edge of her bed, the events from earlier tonight still replaying in her head. Derek had told her not to go back to the hospital and that she should try to get a good night of sleep tonight.
She argued and insisted that she needed to be at the hospital in case anything were to happen, but Derek refused to let her go.
He had noticed the dark circles under her eyes and knew that she needed rest- rest that she wouldn't be able to get while sitting outside of Isaac's room for another night.
Their fight ended with her shouted how awful he was and slamming her bedroom door in his face, only to come out thirty seconds later looking for something to help her fall asleep.
After everything that happened tonight she wouldn't be able to relax her thoughts and get any sleep.
Rose stared at the dresser in front of her, her eyes catching the glimpse of the photo of her and Isaac.
She gulped as she knew that the tears were going to form in her eyes soon. She only could wish that she was back in that moment with him. Life seemed simpler back than. No one was possessed, Isaac was smiling, Rose was happy.
But at this point, Rose could only hope and pray with everything she had that Isaac will be alright, and soon everything would be back to normal.
There was a knock at the door not even five minutes later after Rose had come out of her room, distracting her once again from her attempt at resting her eyes.
She wiped her eyes, hiding the tears that had fallen and whispered a quiet, "Come in."
Derek then peaked his head in, evidently he couldn't sleep either.
Rose looked at him waiting for him to say something.
He then asked, "Wanna play a game of chess?"
...
Rose stared blankly down at the chessboard on the table in front of her and Derek. It was really the first time she was out of the hospital. And as much as she didn't want to admit it, it felt good to not be there. The hospital was slowly causing her to lose sanity.
"So what does the king signify again?" Derek asked.
Rose bent down to pick up the king and began explaining it to him for the third time, "The king is the most important piece. The object of the game is to threaten the opponent's king in such a way that escape is not possible."
"But why am I the king?" He inquired.
Rose leaned back down against the couch and shrugged her shoulders. "You gotta ask Stiles that question."
"Are you guys really playing chess at a time like this?" Peter's mocking voice asked.
Rose immediately sent Peter a glare, it was always her immediate reaction when seeing her Uncle.
Peter ignored her nieces' harsh look and continued by asking, "And more importantly, why aren't you healing?"
Rose's focus then went to Derek's wound on his arm.
"It's from one of their swords. It'll heal."
"By playing chess?"
"Back in his room, Stiles had a board with my name on one of the pieces. If this is a game to him, then I need to figure out the plays." Derek explained.
Peter nodded and then turned to Rose, "And why is Little Miss. Ray of Sunshine here?"
Rose rolled her eyes before answering, "Well other than the fact that I live here...on Stiles' board I'm one move away from a checkmate."
"Why?" Peter asked becoming more interested.
"Do you think I know?"
"Such a spitfire." Peter mumbled.
"Don't you have somewhere to be like... I don't know, not here?" Rose shot back.
"Listen, all I'm going to say that it's kind of pointless." Peter remarked
"What is that supposed to mean?" Derek asked averting his eyes from the chessboard to Peter.
"I mean that it isn't going to be very easy for you guys considering there are no rules to the game," he continued, "You're dealing with a kind of spirit that's lived too long to play by human rules. It's a fox spirit that chose to become human. And supposedly, that's something they can do only after about 100 years. If a Kitsune is annoying to you, then a Nogistune, which is a dark Kitsune, is a freaking disaster. Besides, chess is Stiles' game, not Rosie's, not Derek's, noone else's. It's not the game of a Japanese fox. Now if I hadn't said anything you wouldn't have that information. You're welcome," he finished with a new found sense of arrogance in him. "Do yourself a favor Derek, and put something on that before it gets infected."
Peter than walked out of the loft, while Derek and Rose both sat there stunned at what he had just said. Before they had anytime to say something else, Rose's phone began ringing in her back pocket.
"Hey Lydia," Rose answered.
"Get to Scott's house, now." She said urgently.
Rose sat up and stood from the couch quickly, "Why? What's happening?"
"We found Stiles."
