*ELI'S POV*
I stopped the car outside a house, helped my mom out, then knocked on the door. A small girl with familiar icy blue eyes opened the door. She gave a questioning glance at my mom and I. I spoke quickly. "Anna, I hate to ask this of you, but my mom is pregnant and my dad wants to kill the child. I can't lose another sibling and mom can't lose another child. Can we please stay with you? At least until we find a new place and move out. I'll pick up a job or drop out of school if I need to-" Anna raised her hand, effectively cutting me off.
"Eli. Sweetie. Stay as long as you need. Don't drop out. I won't stop you from picking up a job, but don't drop out. That won't do you any good in the future. Deal?" Reluctantly, I nodded, and Anna stepped aside so my mom and I could enter. I looked around. The house was clean, spotless, almost, with the exception of a plate sitting on the counter. As I watched, Anna put the plate in the dishwasher and started it. She then turned to us. "Do either of you need anything? Food, water, entertainment?" My mom shook her head as I asked a question.
"What about sleeping?" She smiled.
"Well, I do have a guest room and the living room couch pulls out into a bed. You can both sleep in the guest room, one can sleep there and one on the couch, or one can take the room or couch and the other can stay with me. It's up to you guys."
"Mom, I'll take the couch. You're pregnant, so you need the bed." She nodded, then went to the guest room that Anna pointed to. I pulled out the couch and sat on it. It wasn't super comfortable, but it was safe. I slowly drifted off to sleep, completely forgetting that my car was parked out in the open, completely visible to anyone who might be watching.
