*AMELIA'S POV*

I looked at the picture of Eli's father, James, and me that was on my bedside table. I sighed, remembering that night. It was date night, a Friday night, and we were at a bar. Eli was at a friend's house having a sleepover, so James and I had the house to ourselves for the night. James never made much money and that wasn't the best to support a child with. I wanted to leave him; I'd been cheating with a rich man named Arthur for a while. Arthur had offered to give Eli and me a new life, a better life, away from poverty. He was who's baby I was carrying, and who offered me the beach house. But I'd needed a way to leave James without seeming like the bad guy. So that Friday, I put my plan into action. When James turned away, I emptied the contents of a pill into his drink. It made someone have intense and possibly violent mood swings that could cause them to lash out. I added another, just for good measure, and when we got home, he hit me. That was just what I needed to keep him in line, more or less. For weeks afterwards, I'd kept reminding him of it, breaking him inside. Finally, once James was easy to control, I forced him to hit me often. Often enough for Eli to notice. I told Eli that his father was the bad guy and he believed me. Now he hates James and soon we can move to be with Arthur, living a rich life full of money and expensive items. I did it, all of it so Eli wouldn't have to live with a drunk that doesn't make over 100,000 dollars a year. I did this for my son, to help him. I set the picture down and went to find Eli so I could ask him about moving again.
