*ANNA'S POV*
I watched Amelia as she paced back and forth, more worried about her than James behind me with a gun. Although, that was probably reasonable; James was on my side. Amelia spoke, seeming angry or upset. "Where is he?! How has he not figured this out by now? I swear, dropping out of school, being the 'bad boy,' and failing to understand the most simple and straightforward of clues! He clearly didn't get my brain." Thank goodness for that, I thought. If Eli had gotten her brain... I shuddered. He'd probably think like her, manipulating and controlling people. I sat still as she ranted to herself, clearly getting more enraged by the second. Suddenly, she turned to me, fury and malice gleaming in her eyes. "You. Ever since he met you, he's spiraled down into this. It's your fault!" I blinked in confusion.
"Wait, what? When I met him, he was a bad boy. I'm the reason he's not anymore. He probably did understand the instructions and is unfortunately on his way right now. And both of us dropped out of school to stay with you and protect you from Eli's dad, who we thought was the dangerous one. But we probably should've just stayed in school since you're the truly wicked one." I felt something sharp and thin whip across my cheek, the momentum of it turning my head. I felt something wet drip onto my jeans. I looked down and saw red. Blood. She'd scratched me. I glanced back up in time to see Amelia glaring down at me. She then started pacing again. James spoke softly to me.
"Why would you do that?"
"I didn't think she'd do anything, and the angrier she is, the more likely she is to slip up somehow. I got her more upset, which gives us a better chance at getting out alive. Now, we just need Eli."
