As Doug set up the computer in their room, Evie paced back and forth behind him.

"Sit down babe, all that pacing may not be good for the baby."

"I cant! Im too nervous. How are we gonna break the news? Okay Doug, no news about the baby until she accepted you, please dont insult her, especially her looks, and-"

"Im sure i know what do to. Calm down." Doug interrupted Evie's rant, though inside his heart was beating as fast as lightning.

As he led a reluctant Evie to her chair in front of the computer, he took a deep breath and the black screen was replaced by a screen with a lady clad in blue.

Doug took his seat.

"Mom! Happy Mother's Day!" Evie cried as Evil Queen appeared on the screen as Evil Queen greeted her with the same enthusiasm.

"Oh i missed you too, darling. Now, tell me, have you been using upward strokes? And your lips... their pale! Where's your lipstick?"

Evil Queen enquired as Evie took out her makeup bag, showing her mom many other new makeup lines that Evie would send to the Isle for her mom.

"Oh! Evie, dear, how's that fashion company you own?" Evil Queen asked and Evie grinned.

"Its doing great, Mom! More sales and more profit."

"That's my dear! You mustve gotten all that talent from me!"

After a few minutes of fussing over makeup and work, Evil Queen finally noticed Doug.

"Evie, darling, who's that?"

Evie looked at Doug.

"Erm... your majesty," Doug started, while Evil Queen preened from the title. "Im Evie's... boyfriend."

"Oh!" Evil Queen exclaimed. "Which royal family are you from? The Charmings? Aurora's perhaps?"

Doug and Evie shared a look before Evie spoke.

"Mom... he's not... a royal."

Evil Queen looked surprised. "Who is he then?" She demanded, voice becoming cold.

"Im... son of Dopey... the dwarf..."

Evil Queen looked flabbergasted. "What? Evie! I taught you better than this!" The son of her sworn enemy? Someone who is not a prince? Dating her precious daughter!

At that, Evie panicked. "Mom! I swear, Doug has helped me a lot with everything. He was there for me when Chad Charming used me and even got me into the science club. Apparently they're exclusive now because princes kept going just to make explosions, but now I get to be a part of it. He even helps me with my dress making. He gets me jewels from his father's mines to put onto the dresses to add an extra sparkle. He doesn't even charge me for them. And he helps me with all my studies, everything!"

Evil Queen's face was still blank. "But... what about marrying a prince? He's not a prince! A dwarf, no less!"

At that, tears started accumulating in Evie's eyes, and her mascara started smudging, courtesy of the fat tears cascading down her rosy cheeks, but she didnt care.

"Mom... He isnt a prince, but he is wealthy from the mines and his father was knighted and he's amazingly smart and he actually cares about me, he calls me beautiful all the time, even when I'm not wearing makeup, because yes, mother, he has seen me after I take my makeup off and he still thinks i'm beautiful. He has protected me from an evil prince and an evil teacher and comforted me when I feel sad and has shown me a future where I can use what I know and make a difference without being a princess and he doesn't know that I know, but he's using his contacts in the kingdom with jewels to find a way for me to make a collection of gowns for the next Auradon Fashion Week and mother I think I love him and I know he loves me for more than my face and my cooking. And-"

Evie was cut off by Doug putting a hand on her trembling one gently, and thus she turned away, burying her face in the crook of Doug's neck, while he put an arm around her comfortingly. Evil Queen's eyes softened as Evie tried to calm herself down, but she was so scared. Scared that her mother would hate her for who she loved. Scared her mother wouldn't talk to her anymore, because she was going against everything she was taught about who to love.

Evil Queen looked at her crying daughter, deciding not to scold Evie for ruining her makeup for once, and turned to Doug.

"Dwarf!" She said, superiority clear in her voice.

Doug sat up at attention, arm still around Evie's trembling figure.

"I understand that you have access to your father's mine?"

Doug nodded instantly. "A percentage of the mine, yes. A rather large fraction, since i am one of the oldest inheritors. But my sister does enjoy the privileges of taking part in the daily operations more." He finished truthfully.

"Good! You wont be spending all your time in the mines, then? What would you do?"

"I plan on doing accountancy, actually, like counting people's money.

Evil Queen furrowed her eyebrows. "Thats all? You count people's money?"

Doug swallowed a lump of saliva. "Well, i take advantage of people's laziness and count their money for them. They pay me a huge chunk of money to do so."

Evil Queen looked more satisfied at that. "Ah. Then i expect you to have a lot of money to pay for my daughter's expensive taste?"

"Yes, of course, but your daughter is also independent and smart enough to earn alot of money herself... from you of course." Doug finished, hoping the Evil Queen would accept his praise.

He was successful.

"Yes, of course, my Evie is incredibly talented at designing and sewing. I taught her that, all by myself."

Doug nodded. "Yes, actually we- she has started a company called Evie's 4 Hearts, im sure you've heard, and its doing really well, Evie and I, we have many branches of shops and we earn alot of money. I account and she designs."

Evil Queen nodded, satisfied. "Very well. I expect you to treat my little Evie like the princess she is."

Doug nodded.

Eventually, Evie looked up from Doug's chest and wiped the smudged mascara off her face.

"Bye mother." She bade after a few more minutes of chatting, and Doug and Evil Queen followed suit.

When the screen went black again, Doug heaved a sigh of relief. "That went better than i expected." He smiled at Evie reassuringly, rubbing her back while Evie nodded.

"Now," Doug stood up. "Lets get you to bed. All that crying cant be good for the baby."

Evie smiled and rolled her eyes. "Im fine."

"Okay then, how did you know about the Auradon Fashion Week thing?"

Evie grinned sheepishly. "I have my ways."

Doug raised an eyebrow jokingly and shook his finger, warning her teasingly. "Evie..."

Evie did nothing but stick out her tongue.

At that, Doug gave her a mischievous look before picking her up, throwing her gently on the bed and attacking her in a series of tickles, sending her into fits of giggles.
