Both Doug and Evie groaned as Evie's phone rang violently in the middle of the night.
"What is it?" Evie muttered, beckoning for Doug to get it. But Doug, who was half asleep, trying to block out the noise, and half blinded by the darkness of slumber and the room, didnt see her hand gesture.
"DOUG!" Evie yelled and Doug shot up from his sleep.
"Ugh." He groaned as he reach over and grabbed Evie's phone, answering it.
It was Ben.
"M-MAL'S HAVING THE BABIES!" Was all he said before hanging up, leaving Doug and Evie in shock and tiredness.
After a few minutes of processing the information, Evie shot out of bed and ran to the bathroom, grabbing a sweatshirt and sweatpants on the way in. In a jiffy, she was already changed and yelling for Doug to get up and change.
.-.-.-.-.
Doug and Evie rushed into the hospital's royal compartment to see a distressed Ben pacing around the room, a tired and 29 week pregnant Lonnie leaning on Jay, who had already started snoozing away. Carlos and Jane were squeezed on a chair, trying not to fall asleep but Belle and Beast were wide awake, each tapping on their phones viciously.
"How's Mal?!" Evie asked as she ran up to Ben and Doug ran after her.
Ben ran a hand through his hair. "I dont know. She's a few weeks late for twins though and she went in screaming her lungs out. I want to be there for her but she doesnt want me to."
Evie sighed. "Mal's like that, you know that... how many centimetres?"
"9." Ben replied. "Its very fast so..."
Evie nodded as Doug led her to a chair when she started complaining about her sore feet.
Ben continued his pacing.
A few hours later, Ben got called into the room and the now fully awake VKs and their partners were waiting anxiously at the doors of the room.
"Ben! How's she? And the babies?"
Evie asked as soon as Ben left the room an hour later.
All eyes were on Ben. His eyes were bloodshot and his hair was messed up. He had obviously been crying.
Ben walked over to a nearby seat and put his head in his hands.
"It wasnt twins. It was triplets. The last one was too small to see and she's not fully developed. The other two are healthy, and we spent a few good minutes with them when they were working on the third, but they say she's not gonna make it."
Everyone crowded around Ben and silence graced the room.
"Is...Mal okay?" Evie threaded cautiously.
Ben shook his head. "She's been crying her eyes out but she kicked me out so i cant see."
"Where are the other two?" Lonnie asked.
"The nursery." Ben answered curtly.
"Er... lets see them." Carlos said, trying to lighten the mood.
Ben sniffled and looked up at his friends. "Thanks guys but no thanks. I love them but im going to the ICU to check on their sister."
The group exchanged worries glances before Doug nodded, understanding Ben's yearn for privacy. Grabbing Evie's hand, he led her and the group to the nursery.
Upon arrival, the group stood at the windows to view the royal babies who were seemingly asleep in their private and luxurious lounges. A large number of paparazzi had already gathered outside the hospital, yearning for chances to see the royal newborns and doctors and bodyguards were trying their best to block them out. Thankfully, their efforts were not futile.
Evie stared at the newborns along with the others. Rubbing her belly, she thought about how her own little one would arrive soon. She smiled and studied the babies.
The girl, who was wrapped in a pink swaddle, despite Mal's protests to make it purple, was sleeping peacefully. She had purple hair like her mother, though it was mauve now, it was sure to darken when she would grow and looked a bit big for her age but was healthy.
The boy, who was wrapped in a blue swaddle, was now crying loudly and had his father's hair but obviously his mother's voice.
Doug looked at Evie, knowing what she was thinking and couldnt help but envision the day that their beautiful offspring would arrive.
Lonnie and Jay seemed to be doing the same.
After a while, Ben walked past with Mal in a wheelchair. Both seemed to have cheered up and freshened up.
Mal smiled, tears in her eyes, though nobody could tell whether it was from mourning the near dead baby or from happiness of their two healthy newborns.
"Hi Mal. You okay?" Evie asked and Mal nodded.
"She was so tiny, Evie." She said, and almost burst into tears again. Evie's eyes softened and she pulled Mal into a hug, followed by Lonnie and Jane joining in.
Belle sensed Mal's sadness and said kindly, "its okay, dear. We are all family. You can cry."
Mal shook the tears away. "No. we didnt even know her for that long. Its okay. Im fine, and so is Ben." She forced a smile and Ben nodded.
Carlos tried to change the topic. "So... what are their names?"
Mal and Ben smiled genuinely for the first time in a few hours.
Sharing a look, both chorused, "Adrian Benedict and Ariana Belle. We will call them Ian and Ari."
"Thats beautiful!" Jane exclaimed and the others nodded.
A few minutes of admiring the babies later, the group went to view the baby girl, who had tubes sticking out of every inch of her tiny body, and she was wailing her heart out in pain. Everyone felt sorry for the little one who had to endure such torture when she was just so little.
"Stella. Stella Adams." Mal muttered. "It means star. She will always be up there, looking over her siblings."
Everyone nodded in agreement of the name.
A few hours after, Stella Rosemarie Adams was declared dead and a grand funeral was to be planned in commemoration of the baby after the christening of her siblings.
