Chapter 45: The sneakiness of a ninja

Yamazaki reached the headquarters long after the sun had gone down. He went to Hijikata's room, but found it empty. He then stepped into the common room where he found the chief, commander and the captains all gathered.

It was an understatement to say that Hijikata was unhappy seeing only one person in the doorway. "Yamazaki. Where are Chiyeko and Shimada?" His voice was full of restrained anger, but if one listened closely they would find worry in his tone.

"I apologise sir, but Chiyeko was attacked" Yamazaki regrettably informed. Everyone began talking over each other. Some voices were angry, some were worried and others were shocked.

"Damare!" Hijikata shouted loudly, immediately silencing everyone.

"It's as Toshi says, we need to be quiet so we can find out what actually happened to her" Kondou was the first to regain himself after Hijikata's shout. He turned towards Yamazaki and calmly asked him;

"What happened Yamazaki?"

"Nishikiri ambushed Shimada and I with a group of his ninjas leaving Chiyeko open to attack. He poisoned her with a knife covered in Clienvemane"

"Nani?!" Everyone exclaimed.

"That's one of the deadliest poisons out there!" Harada commented.

"Yeah, isn't that the one they call Vortex Petal because just one petal could kill you in a day?" Nagakura asked worriedly.

"Hai, you are both correct"

"Well don't keep us in suspense, how is she?" Okita questioned angrily at Yamazaki.

"Saito-san found her the remedy to the poison so she'll live. But she may be over there for a few days because she's going to gain a fever thanks to the after effects of the poison"

"She's alive? Thank God..." Kondou sighed in relief.

"We need to go see how she's doing" Nagakura stated.

"We can't afford to send any active captains all the way out to Tenma" Hijikata stated.

"But-!" Nagakura started, but was cut off by Hijikata.

"That just means we have to send someone else"

"What about Heisuke? He's her boyfriend and his duties aren't so active since he can't go out in the daytime" Harada suggested.

"Hmm...That is a good idea, but I don't want to send him by himself in case something happens" He was quiet for a few minutes before sighing and looking up at Okita. "Looks like I don't have a choice...Souji. You go with Heisuke to Tenma. When you get there tell Shimada to come back here"

"Sure thing Hijikata-san"

"Leave while Heisuke can still move easily" Okita nodded and left the common room to retrieve Heisuke.

"That Nishikiri bastard...He'll pay for this..." Hijikata growled angrily.
