Chapter 12: Nishikiri Kioshi

After sparring for an hour with Harada, Heisuke-kun appeared to be feeling better. He was acting as he always did which caused relief to flow through me. He's not upset with me like I thought he was, that's good. When evening arrived, we had a lively dinner before everyone retired to their rooms for the night. I was getting ready to go to sleep when it happened.

I had changed into my sleeping kimono and was putting my hair up into a ponytail when I heard the sound of a large group of people approaching the Yagi house. What's going on? I finished tying my hair up and slipped my feet back into my zori sandals. I was about to open my door to check out the situation when someone beat me to it. The door to my room flew open and I reflexively let out a frightened shout. "It's okay Chiyeko-chan, it's just me!" Heisuke-kun walked into the room with his hands held up defensively.
"Great, maybe you can tell me what's going on?"
"We're not entirely sure of the situation, but a group of ninjas have come charging into the headquarters"
"Oh no...! What could they be here for?"
"I'm as clueless as you I'm afraid. Come with me, I'll take you to a safe place"
"B-But I want to fight too!" I tried to retrieve Aka Tatsu, but Heisuke-kun stopped me with a tight grip on my arm.
"I know you want to help, but leave this to the professionals for now"
"But you said my sword skill has improved! I'm good enough to join you on patrols now! Why won't you let me help?!"
"Because I care about you and don't want to see you hurt!" He wants to keep me safe..."Now as your division captain, I order you to follow me" My heart felt happy that he was trying to protect me.
"O-Okay Heisuke-kun, lead the way!" Heisuke-kun grabbed hold of my hand and we ran through the corridors of the Yagi house, weaving our way through the ninjas.
"It's Chiyeko! Get her!" Suddenly, a small group of ninjas surrounded us. Me...? Why on Earth do they want me? One of them grabbed my arm and pulled hard. My hand was ripped out of Heisuke-kun's.
"Heisuke-kun...!"
"Let her go!" Heisuke-kun swiftly swept the ninja off his feet and pulled me away so I didn't fall with him. Heisuke-kun then hid me behind his back before drawing his katana. "I'm not handing over Chiyeko-chan to you!"
"We will carry our orders out, take this!" The group approached us all at once.
"That won't work on me baka!" Heisuke-kun easily wounded all the ninjas, some of the wounds were fatal leaving the ninjas who received them out of commission. More ninjas surrounded us, but they ultimately fell to Heisuke-kun and his blade. "Gah...!" Heisuke-kun! A ninja's sword managed to nick Heisuke-kun on his left shoulder. "Grr, you bastard! That won't stop me!"
"You can't keep this up forever!" One of the ninjas yelled. He's right...I knew Heisuke-kun was trying his best, but I could tell that protecting me from so many opponents was slowly, but surely beginning to overwhelm him.
"Heisuke-kun! My being here is dragging you down!"
"Iie, it's not! I'm fine!" I could see the beads of sweat that had began to gather on his forehead as he continued to fight the ninjas off. His breath was also coming out in heavy pants.
"Please Heisuke-kun, we both know you can't keep this up! You're getting tired and I don't want to see what happens when you run out of stamina!" I yelled worriedly at him, but he wasn't having it.
"Don't say that, I'm gonna protect you Chiyeko-chan...!"
"Iie! I'll escape by myself! Then you won't have to worry about me!" I hurriedly suggested, worried and afraid Heisuke-kun was reaching his limit.
"Whoa...!" One of the ninja came dangerously close to wounding Heisuke-kun's legs.
"Please Heisuke-kun, I know I can survive if I escape! I have to go or something worse might happen!"
"Like nani?"
"If I stay here then we both might meet our ends! And I don't know about you, but I don't wanna die today!"
"Chiyeko-chan..."
"It's okay Heisuke-kun. Don't you remember? You've saved my life multiple times now. I won't be so baka as to throw it away, at the very least not without a fight"
"...Fine. I'll trust ya, but you better come back to me alive!"
"I will Heisuke-kun!"
"Here, take this. In case you have to engage in that fight you mentioned" He handed me a dagger.
"Arigato Heisuke-kun, I'll be sure to protect myself with this"
"I'll see ya later then Chiyeko-chan"
"Hai you will, sayōnara Heisuke-kun!" I ran off towards the back of the Yagi house.
"There she is! Don't let her escape!" A group of ninjas came running towards me, but the 3rd Division captain stepped into their path to halt their advance.
"That's as far as you go" He then turned to me. "Run Chiyeko. We will deal with this battle and meet up later"
"Hai Saito-san!" I nodded before I took off running again through the confusion of battle.
