Chapter 47: Kioshi and the Satsuma

{The Shinsengumi, once solid, now wavered. It left me wondering what would happen to us if this continued? What would happen to the Fury Corps if people like Nagakura continued to hate them? Men were forced to watch as their friends became the undead monsters known as furies...I guess it was no wonder that members found themselves conflicted or that tempers had begun to rise...}

I missed being with Heisuke, but I also missed working with him. Since he could no longer go on day patrols, I asked Hijikata-san if it was alright that I went on night patrols with him. He was on the fence about it, but with a little persuasion from Kondou-sama, he allowed it. Though, he gave us only an hour to complete our patrol. So, here we were now. Walking down the road that connected Osaka to Kyoto, making sure there were no Satsuma soldiers making trouble.
"I can't believe you actually convinced Hijikata-san to allow us to go on patrol together"
"Well, Kondou-sama helped. I just really wanted to be able to spend more time with you"
"Same here" We walked along with our hands joined together. After half an hour of patrolling, we finally found something suspicious. We saw a trio of men running off the road and into a forest. "I don't think they saw us, but why would anyone need to go to a forest at this time of night?"
"Well, there's only way to find out. Let's investigate!" I pulled him along, excited to finally see some action. We quietly followed them deep into the forest and found that they were meeting up with two other men.
"What are they all here for?" Heisuke questioned quietly.
"I think we're about to find out, listen" We both directed our gazes and our ears to the men;
"So, why are we meeting here in the middle of the night?"
"Because someone came to me with a very interesting proposal"
"Well don't keep us in the dark, spill!"
"This guy said if we did something for him, he'd give us pointers on how to surprise attack that blasted Shinsengumi"
"The Satsuma will be victorious this time, there's no way they'll be able to stop us if they don't know we're coming"
"They're planning a sneak attack on the Shinsengumi?!" I gasped. "We've gotta go warn minna!" Heisuke nodded and we turned to leave when we found one of the men behind us.
"You're not warning anyone girly" He drew his sword and swung. Heisuke tackled me to the ground allowing us both to avoid his swing.
"This is too important to wait, you've gotta go back and tell them now"
"Got it. Be careful Heisuke"
"Always" Heisuke stood up and challenged the man while I ran away. Though, it soon became obvious that I should've stayed with Heisuke.
"Aw, come on! Now is not the time to be getting lost Chiyeko!" I tried different directions, but I couldn't find my way out. I continued running around until I found myself in front of a cliff. "This definitely isn't the right way..." I sighed. Damn my terrible sense of direction! I turned around to run back into the forest, but found my way blocked by one of the Satsuma soldiers. I put my hand on Aka Tatsu's hilt with the intention of drawing it.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you" The man revealed a gun. I instantly stiffened as he turned the safety off. "You see, now that you've caught wind of our little plan, I can't let you live" He took a step towards me and I took a step back. At this rate, I'm going to fall off the cliff! My body began to tremble at my predicament. I was either going to get shot or fall off a cliff, both of which would likely result in my death. He continued to try and close the distance between us and I continued to step back in an attempt to stop him from getting closer to me.
"Chiyeko!" Heisuke ran towards us, but stopped when the man took out a second gun and pointed it at him.
"Heisuke, you shouldn't have come!"
"You weren't at the entrance to the forest so I got worried and came looking for you"
"You two are in love, aren't you?" The man sneered. "Then I'll let you watch your boyfriend die before I kill you" He let a bullet loose, but it didn't hit Heisuke who dodged it by the skin of his teeth. He readied the gun to shoot again.
"Iie! Leave him alone!" Just as I was about to run and throw myself at the Satsuma soldier, there was a loud crack as my legs fell from underneath me. "Whoa?!" The place where I was standing started to crumble. "Oh no..."
"Chiyeko, iie!" Heisuke ran towards me and reached out his hand, but he didn't make it in time. I felt myself falling through the air and let out a frightened scream. "Chiyeko!" The Satsuma soldier, who had regained himself from the shock, pointed his gun at me. Two gunshots went off before pain exploded in my abdomen. My consciousness began to fade from the pain and extreme fear I was feeling. Just before it did, I swear I saw Heisuke jump off the cliff after me.
