The next night, we found ourselves hiding in a copse of trees facing the gates of Sendai Castle. Nearby we could see several soldiers-likely furies-on patrol in front of it. The impregnable castle constructed many years ago by the legendary Masamune Date now played host to a villain. "All right, how should we deal with this...It looks like they've only got two guards right now..."
"Um Heisuke...? Don't mean to be the voice of reason here-Okay, I totally mean to be the voice of reason here. Are you really just going to walk in the front door? Because that seems incredibly baka"
"Hey, c'mon Chiyeko, you make it sound like I haven't thought it through! I have a plan, you know?"
"Well, as long as you're not charging in blindly"
"You know how Sanan-san thinks right? He's the type to lure you into a false sense of security so I figured he'd guard the back door better than the front"
"That's a reasonable thought, but it doesn't get us in the castle" After our little...experience last night, Heisuke appeared to be acting more and more like himself. While I, on the other hand, had developed a sudden and extreme inability to look directly at his face without blushing furiously.
"You listening Chiyeko? Sanan-san's always been good at out-thinking people, so I figure he might not be expecting something so straightforward"
"I-I'm listening, but don't you think it'd be better if we found Kimigiku-chan first? There's strength in numbers plus she told us that she was going to find a way in..." No sooner had the words left my lips then we heard the sound of footsteps nearby. Heisuke and I spun around to find out who was approaching us. We found that it was not Kimigiku-chan coming this way. Nor was it my brother;
"He he he...Excellent insight Toudou-kun. You almost know me better than I know myself"
"Ah!" I let out a cry of surprise at the sound of his voice. Approaching us was someone much worse.
"Then again, I might say the same about myself and you. I thought you might try and enter this way, so I came to have a look around...and it seems I was right!"
"Sanan..." I stated quietly as my legs began to shake. I wasn't exactly thrilled to see the person who had kidnapped me and forced me to become a fury.
"Indeed I am. Shame we haven't seen one another in so long" He was wearing western clothes now, but even so his smile still looked the same as it always had. In fact, nearly everything about him looked just the same as I remembered it...Except from the dark, sickening dread he seemed to exude from each pore. "You've come all this way just to see my castle? I confess, I'm surprised to see both of you. I only expected Toudou-kun..."
"Well, you got both of us. She's not going anywhere" Heisuke stated with a provocative smile.
"Interesting that you would ask Kazama-chan to serve as a witness to your death. That seems cruel, does it not?"
"Whatever you say, pal. She's not here for your amusement. She's here to watch me complete my mission" He smiled determinedly. "And calling someone else's castle yours? You sure you're not counting your chickens before they hatch Sanan-san?"
"Well, perhaps not all mine. I would say...at least ninety percent. This is where my country will begin to take shape"
"Your country..." It seems I'm still needed in the role of the voice of reason. "Sanan, you can't still seriously be thinking of founding a kingdom of furies! It's an insane dream that will only worsen the future of Japan!" My comment didn't seem to phase Sanan who looked up at Sendai Castle. Darkness had turned it into a massive, ominous monolith, frowning down on the city at its feet in grim judgment. I remembered the furies roaming the streets in search of blood and even how during the day the city seemed dead. Does Sanan mean to extend that misery and ugliness to the rest of the domain? To the rest of the country...? I shuddered at the thought.
"And nani, you'll be the emperor of this new country? That doesn't sound like you Sanan-san"
"He he he...As I said, Toudou-kun, you know me well. But I've already told you, haven't I? The ruler of my country will be the fury princess. Well, the nominal ruler, at any rate"
"Iie, she won't! Sen-chan would never agree to something like that!"
"Not now, perhaps, but she'll come under my sway eventually. They all do. I've been feeding her my blood daily for some time now"
"You'll pay for what you're doing to Sen-chan!" I exclaimed angrily.
"You're nuts! There's just no convincing you to let it go, is there? Even if I asked ya nicely?"
"You take me for quite the fool, don't you?"
"So you're not gonna let me talk you out of this then..." Heisuke sighed as his face lost its smile and he finally turned serious. He lowered himself into a fighting stance as he drew his katana and held it in front of him. "Alright, your loss. Guess that means I'm gonna have to do this the hard way! I'll stop you 'cause this world doesn't need a country full of furies!" Instead of drawing his sword in response to Heisuke's threat, Sanan hung his head. The sadness that showed on his face was all the more terrifying for being genuine.
"...We fought together in the Shinsengumi once and we both became furies there. I cherished you more than anyone else. You were a brother to me, above all" Those words reminded me of something similar Sanan had said long ago;
