Chapter 28: Men and their nose bleeds

This chapter will hopefully provide a bit of comic relief from all the serious stuff that's been happening. So that being said, enjoy and I hope it makes you laugh!

The compound was alive with the sound of movement. There was lively chatter going through the air. I passed several soldiers in the hall who were all excited about something. What's happening? Just then, Itou ran round the corner and stopped in front of me with his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. "This is...this is unconscionable! Never in all my...!" He panted.
"Something wrong, Itou-san?"
"Hai! Hai, I'd say everything is wrong! Why should I be made to bare my skin in the same room as those...those savages?!"
"Nani?" His explanation made zero sense to me. "Is something happening today?" Itou shakily adjusted his hair and clothing, doing his best to collect himself, before he replied;
"A supposed doctor that Kondou-san met during the shogun's visit has come here. He is conducting...physical examinations" He glared pointedly across the hall, toward the area he'd just left after he let out a disdainful sniff. "That hairless monster! He demanded that I remove my clothes! In front of everyone! When I refused, as any decent man would do, he attempted to remove them himself! By force! And the rest of them just...just stood there! What sort of uncultured savages are they?!"
"Who's the doctor giving the examinations?"
"I believe he called himself Matsumoto Ryojun"
"Oh, so the doc's in charge of the exams? You can trust him, he's treated me more times than I'd care to remember"
"Trusting him is not the issue here! I refuse to be bared naked in a room full of savages like them!" He then turned on his heel and furiously walked away.
"Okay then..." Well, that wasn't strange at all(!) I was on my way to sit outside and just enjoy the weather, when Hijikata-san approached me. "Ohayō Hijikata-san, is there anything I can do for you?"
"Hai. You're a member of the Shinsengumi and you need to undergo a physical examination just like the rest of them"
"Nani?!" Is he crazy?!
"I'm pretty sure you heard me kid"
"I am not doing that!"
"Hai, you are!"
"Iie, I'm not! I don't even need one! I'm feeling fine!"
"You're getting one whether you like it or not!" He thrust something into my arms and I looked down to see pants and what I assumed to be a sarashi. "Now put those on and get in there!"
"You're crazy if you think I'm going in there!"
"Damn, you are a stubborn kid" He sighed.
"It's not stubbornness! It's common decency! I'm a woman! Of course I don't want to go in there with a bunch of half naked men! And it only occurred to me now, but why do you even have a sarashi?!"
"You'd be surprised with the kinds of things we confiscate from ronins and rogue samurai. Now, change into that and go have your physical exam. That is an order!" He yelled the words I had been dreading most.
"But that's unfair!"
"Go. Change. Now"
"Fine!" I stomped off and went to my room. I took off my kimono and slipped my legs into the pants. I tied the sarashi around my breasts tightly to ensure it wouldn't slip off. I left my room and found Hijikata-san waiting for me.
"Let's go" He led me to the room the examinations were being held in. Loud voices could be heard within. "Good luck kid" Hijikata-san smirked before he opened the door, shoved me inside and closed the door. All in quick succession. I looked around and instantly felt the blood rush to my cheeks. I don't know where to look! I quickly joined the line while bouncing my gaze around. Making sure not to stare in one place for too long.
"All right, next" I heard the good doctor's voice and my eyes were automatically drawn to him as he was the only fully clothed person in here. Although, what I saw next froze me in place.
"At last! My turn! Check this out, Doctor!"
