"Ahh..." Pain pulsated from my abdomen as soon as I regained consciousness.
"Chiyeko!? Can you hear me?" I slowly opened my eyes and the first thing I saw were Heisuke's eyes, clouded over with concern. The rest of him came into focus soon after.
"Heisuke...?"
"Thank God you woke up...I've been worried sick"
"I'm...alive...?" I tried to sit up, but my body wasn't ready for that yet and I fell right back onto the futon.
"You should know that there was no way I was going to sit by and let you die. We're at a Doctor's clinic in Shirakawa. He stitched you up to stop the bleeding and bandaged you up for extra precaution"
"You'll do so much to save my life...yet you have completely no regard for your own"
"That's because you...you're nothing like me"
"Nani...?"
"Sure, you might be a demon turned fury, but...You have a chance at living a long and normal life. Unlike me, who's basically got a sword dangling over my head 'til I turn to ashes..." Heisuke tightly gripped his chest, as if his hand were clutching his heart directly before averting his defeated gaze towards the floor.
"You don't know that for sure! We literally know nothing about how being a fury affects a demon's lifespan. I could share the same fate as you as easily as I could not"
"Even so, you turned into a fury a few years after me. You still have more of your life to live. Much more than I have left to live..."
"That's doesn't matter Heisuke. My life doesn't mean more than yours just because I may live longer than you. That's not right and you know it"
"Isn't it though? What do you plan on doing if I can barely hold myself together, huh? For all we know, my legs could turn to ash tomorrow"
"T-Then I'll be right by your side to support you...!" Heisuke's pessimism shocked me a little causing me to stutter.
"Yeah? And what happens when I reach out to grab our future and my arms crumble away into nothing?"
"Then my hands will be right there to grab it for you Heisuke!" I was more sure of myself now. After a long silence, Heisuke turned to look at me and his face was the gentle, friendly one I'd known for so long. Not even the Water of Life could take it away.
"You fool...You damn fool...Mind clueing me in to how you're so damn optimistic, even when all signs point otherwise?"
"How? I mean, look at us. You're here, sitting right beside me. Every time we find ourselves alone, no matter what, we can be honest with each other and communicate" I could feel the tears starting to build up, but I blinked them away. "Not a lot of couples have this amazing dynamic that we have. So how could...how could I willingly give that up...? It would break me-completely break me-if you died Heisuke"
"Chiyeko..." Heisuke sighed in defeat, yet he was grinning widely from ear to ear. "I'm not still that much of a kid that I'm gonna start feeling better just 'cause someone tells me to, all right? And I don't really think there's any way to save a fury...But with you by my side, I feel like it's still possible. You give me the faith I need to believe"
"Heisuke...!"
"M-Maybe...Maybe I'll give life another shot, just for you"
"Arigato Heisuke, you don't know how happy that makes me"
"I think I can make a pretty good guess" He then kissed me on both my eyelids. "You're crying which means you're extremely happy"
"Oh, I didn't even realise I was crying..." I hurriedly wiped at my cheeks to rid them of tears. Heisuke chuckled at my actions before leaning forward and placing his lips over mine. "Mhhm..." Heisuke...We were uncertain when exactly, if at all, Heisuke would lose touch with reality. For all we knew, it could've been tomorrow and his body would crumble to ash like the burned tip of an incense candle. I savoured his kiss, knowing it very well could've ended up being our last one ever, but even if it was...I was content. Whatever the future had in store for us, I would always remember this moment. I would cherish it, capturing and freezing it in my mind's amber.
Suddenly, pain started in my heart and quickly spread to the rest of my body, shattering the nice moment we were enjoying with one another. What an annoyingly painful coincidence...I pulled away as the pain manifested itself. "Argh!"
"Chiyeko, what's-!?" Heisuke stopped himself mid-question and gasped. I had a pretty good guess as to why he did so. My hair and eyes had most likely changed colour along with four horns growing out of my forehead.
"It's the bloodlust...isn't it? Gah!"
"Chiyeko let me-!"
"Iie! I promised I wouldn't drink blood...so I could stay me..." My breaths became laboured as I began to sweat heavily. "I can-ahh!" The pain worsened as my body's desire for blood increased.
"Chiyeko!" Heisuke pulled me into an embrace. "If I can't relieve your pain then I can at least try to comfort you through it"
"Arigato...Heisuke..." Heisuke's warmth and presence soothed me and allowed me to ignore the madness that called me. Eventually, the bloodlust passed and I was back to normal. "That was not pleasant..." I sighed.
"It never will be, I'm afraid"
"True..." Heisuke pulled me in for a kiss. "Mmm!?"
"But I'll always be here to help you through it"
"Arigato gozimasu Heisuke, I don't know what I'd do without you"
"Good thing you'll never have to find out" Heisuke grinned before suddenly getting into the futon with me. "Now, it's gonna be morning soon meaning we should get some sleep. Tonight, if you're feeling better, we'll head to Sendai"
"Roger that captain" I gave him a peck on the cheek and snuggled into his chest.
"Well, you best get plenty of rest soldier because we'll be leaving when it's dark and early!" He joked and gave me a kiss on the forehead.
"I hear you loud and clear" I giggled. "So is it oyasumi or ohayō?"
"Why don't we just say sleep well?"
"That is an excellent idea Heisuke"
"I'm more than just a handsome face"
"You're right there, you are much more than a handsome face" I bopped his nose with a smile. "You're my handsome boyfriend. Now let's get some sleep. Big day tonight"
"Sleep well Chiyeko"
"Sleep well Heisuke"
