Chapter 61: Fatal persistence

A day later, Heisuke left the headquarters ten minutes before the time Saito had reported seeing Sanan. He laid in wait and ten minutes later, his target appeared.

I've got you now! He stuck to the shadows and crowds as he secretly followed Sanan.

I followed him into a forest and recognised our surroundings as I hid behind a tree. This is where we were searching for Chiyeko a week ago...I can't believe we were so close to her without knowing it...I stepped out from behind the tree and continued to follow Sanan-san. We'd been walking for around five minutes when Sanan-san abruptly stopped. I quickly hid myself behind a tree and slowed my breathing down. Don't tell me he noticed me?! But I was being so quiet! I stayed as still as a statue for about two minutes before I risked taking a peek out from the tree. When I did so, I found no one standing there. "Nani?!" Where'd he go?! Suddenly, something was stabbed into my neck and I felt a liquid being released into my bloodstream. I turned around to see Sanan-san. "You...!?" My legs lost all their strength and I fell to the ground. My vision blurred as Sanan-san stood over me.
"Did you forget I'm your superior? I know all your tricks, Toudou-kun" His cold smile was the last thing I saw before darkness swallowed me up.

"Ugh...That was some strong stuff..." I groaned as I opened my eyes and rubbed the spot where the needle had pierced me. The chains connected to the shackles around my wrists rattled quietly as I did so. My vision was still blurry so I had to blink a few times to clear it. When I could see clearly again, my eyes widened in shock. Chiyeko was chained to the cave wall opposite me. She was deathly pale, except for her face which was a deep red. She's got a fever! There were trails of dried blood on both her kimono sleeves and down both sides of her neck. Also, her breathing was irregular. Her breaths came out much more frequently than usual and were far too shallow. "Chiyeko!" She didn't even stir. I shouted her name again. Got the same response. "Damnit Chiyeko, wake up!" This time, she stirred. "Chiyeko, can you hear me?! Please open your eyes!" She moaned before her eyes fluttered open and she weakly lifted her head.
"Hei...suke...?" She blinked a few times, as if not believing her eyes. "Is it really you...?"
"Hai, it's me"
"I don't believe you...Every time I believe it's you...you disappear on me...I don't want you to disappear...I need you, Heisuke..." She began to sob. She's been hallucinating...That must mean she's delirious...Poor Chiyeko...
"Gomenasai for leaving you before Chiyeko, but this time I'm here to stay. Unfortunately, I got captured by Sanan-san as well so looks like we're both trapped"
"It really is you, Heisuke. Gomenasai..."
"Why're you apologising?"
"Because it's my fault we're here...it's all...my...fault..." She trailed off as her head flopped back down. She had lost consciousness. She needs medical help! This may be a baka idea, but I've got no other choice!
"Sanan-san!!!" I yelled his name as loud as I could. I repeated this until I heard his footsteps from deep inside the cave. They got closer until he turned the corner, approached me and looked down angrily.
"What do you want? I'm busy"
"Chiyeko has started hallucinating and has a fever! She needs medical attention or she'll die!"
"My experiments still need more of her blood and her blood won't be the same if she's unwell" He mumbled to himself. "...I guess I can't let her die yet" He sighed before agreeing to treat her. He left the cave and came back several minutes later with some medicine. He made Chiyeko take it and stepped away. "If she doesn't get better straight away, call for me" With that he turned down the right corner of the cave and was gone. That's good, he still needs her alive. But what happens to us when he no longer needs her? I worriedly watched Chiyeko as questions flew around inside my head. Questions that I preferred not knowing the answers to.
