I woke up alone in the room this time. I stretched and yawned before getting out of the futon. My legs could support me this time, but I walked around the room a bit. Just to be sure. I removed the damp towel from around my neck and put it in the bucket of water that was close to the futon. I carefully put my hand to my neck and rejoiced when it didn't cause me pain. "I guess the doctor was right" My voice was back to normal and it didn't hurt to use it too.
"Good to see you up and about" I jumped at the doctor's voice. "Gomen, I didn't mean to startle you"
"It's okay, I'm the one who didn't hear you come in" I noticed he was carrying a tray.
"This time you must let me treat you to breakfast"
"I'll take you up on your offer" I smiled and sat down. He handed me the tray and left, saying he had to go through some records. My mind wandered as I ate the kindly prepared breakfast. How was it Heisuke-kun's fault? I don't understand...well I hope he'll be willing to talk to me today...I finished my food and washed the plates and bowls used to thank the doctor for taking time to prepare me breakfast.
"You didn't have to do that"
"True, but I felt like doing it. It was no trouble"
"Well I guess what's done is done, no use fretting over it" I wonder if Heisuke-kun will listen if I tell him that...
"Exactly" I bowed. "Arigato! I'm extremely grateful for your kindness and hospitality!"
"I'm a doctor, it's my job to treat and help you"
"Not all doctors are kind like you. Believe me, I've met several doctors and not one was nice to me"
"It's a shame that they became doctors...well you're welcome for being the first nice doctor you've met"
"I'll be on my way then, see you!"
"Goodbye" I waved as I walked away. Okay, first order of business! Apologising to Kondou-sama, I hope he won't be too mad at me...

I dropped off my paper pad and brush in my room before heading to Kondou-sama's room. Here goes...I took a deep breath and knocked on his door. "It's me sir"
"Come in" His response was lacking its usual cheeriness. I brought this upon myself...I slid open the door and shuffled into the room. "Close the door Kawaguchi-chan" I closed the door and quickly bowed.
"Gomenasai Kondou-sama! I never meant to stay out so late!" He stepped towards me and I closed my eyes to brace myself for the punishment I was about to receive.
"Raise your head" I did so, but kept my eyes closed. Arms wrapped around me and I stiffened out of surprise. I opened my eyes and looked at him in confusion;
"Um Kondou-sama...? What are you doing?"
"I thought that 'they' had got to you..."
"They?"
"Please forget I said anything, I'm just glad you're alive" He let me go. "Maybe you can talk some sense into Heisuke"
"What happened? Is he okay!?"
"He's fine physically, but there's something bothering him. I was hoping you could find out what it is since he won't open up to any of us"
"You've all known him for years. What makes you think someone who's known him for a week could do anything?"
"Something tells me he'll open up to you" He smiled knowingly which only managed to confuse me more. "Run along now, he's probably still shut himself in his room"
"But I don't-"
"Kawaguchi-chan please talk to Heisuke, that's an order"
"O-okay...?" I was still confused, but I couldn't really refuse an order from the Chief of the organisation I now worked for. "I'll do my best sir" I bowed and left his room. I contemplated on how to handle this situation as I walked to his room. I still had not come up with an idea by the time I found myself outside Heisuke-kun's room. I guess I'll just knock and hope for the best? I raised my hand to knock when someone from behind suddenly grabbed my wrist and stopped me. I cried out in surprise and turned around to see Okita-san.
"That was a cute noise"
"Don't tease me Okita-san!" I pulled my wrist free of his grip. "What do you want?"
"You"
"N-Nani...!?" My face brightly reddened.
"Yup, I want you because it's time for your training"
"Okita-san!" He began laughing and I punched him in the arm. "Don't do that!"
"That reaction was priceless!" He chuckled. "Anyway, you do need to train now. Kondou-san may have accepted you as a member, but you have a long way to go before you're capable of fighting the enemy"
"I know, don't remind me..." I was about to follow him when Heisuke-kun's door suddenly slid open. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from Okita-san "Heisuke-kun!?"
"It's my job to train you" I looked back at Okita-san to see him smirking with his thumbs up. Wait, he planned for this to happen? I was dragged outside with a tight grip around my wrist.
"Heisuke-kun you're hurting me!"
"Enemies will do a lot more than hurt you if you're not trained" He tossed me a wooden sword. I caught it and held it out in front of me. "Come at me"
"Nani?"
"I said come at me!" Heisuke-kun's raised voice spurred me into action. I swung my sword at him, but he easily deflected my swing and hit me in the side. "That's no good, again"
"But-" He swung for me cutting off my sentence. I dodged, but he quickly swung again and hit me in the stomach. This went on for ten minutes before I had decided enough was enough. "That's it!" I threw the wooden sword away. "When you're ready to actually train me and not take your anger out on me, I'll be in my room!" I stormed off to my new room. I closed the door and sat on my futon. When I was certain no one was around, I let the tears fall. I wasn't crying because I was upset or angry. I was crying simply because the pain Heisuke-kun inflicted was too much for my body. What's gotten into him? He's not the Heisuke-kun I know...I rubbed the sore places on my body trying to remedy the pain. Five minutes later, there was a knock at my door. "Who is it?"
"It's me. Can we...talk?" Heisuke-kun's voice was quieter than usual. I stood up and slid open the door.
"Are you ready to treat me like a proper human being and not a punching bag?"
"Hai..."
"Then hai, we can talk" I stepped aside to let him in and closed the door behind him. "Are you going to tell me why you chose to take your anger out on me?" His eyes widened when he looked at my face.
"Your eyes are red, have you been crying?"
"Don't answer a question with a question, it's annoying" I looked away from him and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I didn't mean to hurt you so badly that you would cry...gomen..."
"I appreciate the apology, but it doesn't answer my question"
"I wasn't trying to take my anger out on you...it just happened" Now he looked away from me. "I wanted to teach you how to protect yourself against bastards like that ronin and then my anger kinda...blinded me..."
"You think?"
"Gomen...for treating you the way I did. It's just...I can't forgive myself for your near death experience..." Now that the training situation was cleared up, my anger towards Heisuke-kun had subsided.
"I thought I already told you it wasn't your fault"
"Actually you didn't"
"And that's because someone wouldn't give the temporarily mute girl her paper to write on"
"Even if you had written that...it wouldn't have changed my mind"
"Why do you feel this way anyway? I don't understand it, you weren't even there"
"You're wrong, I was there...and if I was faster you..." He trailed off with his fists clenched. I reached out a hand to place on his shoulder, but he stepped out of my reach. Unsure of his mood, I hesitantly questioned him;
"What do you mean by 'faster' Heisuke-kun?"
"Hajime-kun was stalling for time so I could sneak up and take the bastard out from behind, but...a couple of his nakamas got in my way. They wouldn't let me pass unless I beat them...if I was faster you wouldn't have had to suffer like that..." My mind unwillingly flashbacked to that time;
