Chapter 23: Do I know you?

The rest of the Shinsengumi that had left to deal with the Choshu had finally returned. Heisuke-kun was happy that his best friends were back and I was happy that the compound would return to being loud and bustling. What can I say? I had grown accustomed to the Shinsengumi's strange ways. Presently, all the captains were in the common room participating in a meeting. For some reason unknown to me, I was also allowed to join this meeting.

"So, let's go over what we learnt during the Hamaguri Rebellion. Saito, you start"
"As you wish, Commander. The 3rd Division were required to remain at Hamaguri gate to protect it and gather information. While we were doing so, we were faced with the ronin who possessed no weapon" A ronin with no weapon?! It can't be..."He was the ronin behind Heisuke's and Chiyeko's injuries" It is! That bastard! I could feel anger towards him begin to bubble up inside me and I clenched my fists so tightly they shook. I'll never forgive him for what he did! A hand wrapped itself around my trembling fist and I looked up to see Heisuke-kun looking at me worriedly.
"I know how you feel Chiyeko-chan, but getting angry does nothing for you. Calm down" He whispered as to not interrupt Saito-san. I nodded, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. That helped to clear the anger out of my head.
"Arigato Heisuke-kun" I whispered back. Saito-san looked at Heisuke-kun and me briefly before continuing;
"He identified himself as Amagiri Kyuju and is said to be allied with the Satsuma Domain" Hijikata-san nodded when Saito-san finished speaking. He then turned his attention to Harada;
"Sanosuke, how about you? You told me you met someone interesting"
"He certainly was interesting to say the least...I took my men to Kuge gate to stop the Choshu's attack on the imperial estate. We had 'em beat, but the guy covering the Choshu's escape stopped us from perusing them. He pulled out his pistol and shot one of the Officers of the Judiciary Commission. Naturally, I challenged him and he introduced himself as Shiranui Kyo. I think it's obvious where his loyalties lie" A pistol...I'd heard of them, but had never seen one in real life. According to what I'd heard, pistols were cylinders of metal that utilised explosive powder in order to fire small metal balls. Apparently, pistols were small, one-handed versions of the type of weapon known as a gun.
"A gun, eh? You don't see too many of those floating around" Okita commented.
"I heard it's pretty hard to obtain one" Heisuke-kun stated.
"Well this guy wasn't normal, I'm not surprised he possesses a hard to acquire weapon" Harada replied. "That's me done. That just leaves you Hijikata-san"
"Shinpachi and I took some men to pursue the leaders of the Choshu attack toward Ten'nou Mountain" He looked directly at me before continuing. "We were halted by Kazama Chikage who claimed to be from the Satsuma Domain. Does that name mean anything to you?" Chikage Kazama...? My head pounded horribly as soon as I heard that name, but if it did mean something to me then I couldn't remember what.
"I-Iie, should it?" I was surprised by his intense gaze.
"I was hoping it would. Kazama and you share many features, you must be related to him"
"Related!? Like a brother or something?!" Heisuke-kun exclaimed. "She can't be related to that guy!" The pain in my head grew worse as Heisuke-kun mentioned the word "brother".
"I don't know if I'm related to him...gomenasai" I bowed my head deeply in apology.
"It doesn't matter, forget I said anything" I had barely registered what Hijikata-san had said. The pain in my head was unbearable. Why does thinking of Kazama's name make my head feel like it's going to split in two? I asked to be excused and quickly left the common room. I couldn't endure the pain in my head any longer and collapsed on the way to my room. My head...ittai-yo...I curled into a ball, a tight grip on both sides of my head. "Chiyeko-chan! What's wrong?" Heisuke-kun helped me lift myself off the floor. Apparently, he had also excused himself from the meeting to follow me.
"I don't know..." Did I know Chikage Kazama? I winced as my head began to pound. Damnit! Every time I begin to remember something, my head starts to pound horribly!
"Chiyeko-chan, you should lie down and rest" Heisuke-kun helped me to my room.
"I'm fine..."
"Iie you're not. Your head still hurts, doesn't it? You should get some more sleep. And stop trying to remember stuff. It'll come to you when it's the time to do so"
"It'll come to you when it's the time to do so..." I repeated subconsciously. I wonder...would I be able to remember everything if the pain would just go away? Heisuke-kun put me on my futon and covered me with my blanket.
"Hold on a sec, I'll go get a cool towel to soothe the pain in your head" Heisuke-kun was gone before I could stop him. This pain in my head always stops me from remembering my past...Maybe he's right, maybe I'll find the key to and unlock my memories when I'm fated to. Heisuke-kun came running back to my room with a bucket in hand. "I went out and drew some cold water" Heisuke-kun dipped the cloth he had brought with him into the water bucket. Then he placed the wet cloth on my forehead. "I bet the coolness feels great?"
"Hai, it does actually" I may actually have a slight fever..."Arigato Heisuke-kun"
"Now you just relax and get some rest"
