September 1868

{We arrived in Sendai in the afternoon. The first thing I noticed when we reached the town was that it was silent and not just silent, but eerily silent. It was the middle of the day, yet the streets were practically empty. Even those who did brave the streets were as silent as the dead, they were careful not to make a single sound. The wind made more noise than any human here. The lack of activity worked in our favour since it made it easier to move around  unseen, but this hardly seemed fitting for a city founded and ruled by the legendary Date family. This left me wondering; if it was this dire and ominous in the daytime, what would it be like at nighttime?}

Sendai at night was like the lair of a fantastical villain that you read about in works of fiction. Sanan's fury soldiers ruled the town with an iron fist that was drenched in blood. Terrified of the voracious bloodlust of the furies, the citizens barricaded themselves in their houses when night fell. With all the doors shut and lights extinguished, Sendai felt like a ghost town. We witnessed shapes moving around in the shadows, but there was no mistaking them for human. It's like we've stumbled into a nightmare...Feeling afraid, I wrapped my arms around Heisuke's arm and moved closer to him. "It's like the whole town suddenly died..."
"Do you really think Sanan-san did all this...?" I looked around at the town that had been turned into a dead, empty tomb and sighed.
"I think we're past the point of thinking that Sanan isn't capable of doing things"
"...I guess you're right"
"If this is what he wants his kingdom of furies to be like then that gives us all the more reason to put a stop to him"
"Yeah..." The city was massive, yet our footsteps were the only sound that could be heard.
"This place is void of people. It's like we're the only ones here..."
"It makes it easier for us to sneak around, but this is just crazy..."
"You can say that again" Suddenly, I felt a spooky presence behind me. It was as if a ghost had brushed against me, rooting me to my spot. The feeling of being watched was palpable and fear began to stir in my chest. A fear I was all too familiar with. Slowly, I turned around to discover who or what was following us. Right in front of me stood a creature who looked human, except for the twisted, hungry grin on its face.
"Blood...Give. Me. Bloooood!" It raised its sword and I let out a frightened yelp as I fumbled to get Aka Tatsu out of its sheath.
"Look out Chiyeko!" Heisuke was faster and already had his sword drawn. He swung his sword down and the creature gurgled as it staggered back a few steps. Though not before some of its blood splattered onto Heisuke's cheeks. The monster had barely even collapsed to the ground when suddenly the city exploded with motion. Human figures materialised from the shadows, drawn in by the blood that had been spilt. Though we knew better, those figures were not human. At least, not anymore. "Furies. They've found us. Should we fight?"
"Normally I'd say hai to a fight, but I'm gonna have to go with iie this time. There's too many of them, it'd be foolish to stand and fight"
"Yeah, you're right. We should retreat-Damnit, they're already here!" A fury leapt at us, but it didn't get to injure us. It quickly fell back, dead, Heisuke's blade sliding out of its heart. "Okay, there aren't too many of them. We should be able to get...away..." He let out a cry of pain as his hair turned white and his eyes turned red.
"Oh no, not now!" I stood in front of Heisuke and drew Aka Tatsu. "Just hang in there, all right?!"
"Yeah...I know...Goddamnit! This isn't...the time...!" His face was stretched with agony and the colour was beginning to fade from it. He's in no condition to fight and I can't take on this many furies, we need to retreat! But where?! My eyes scanned the area as I defended against and killed furies. Eventually, they landed on somewhere useful. There! An empty house!
"Come on, Heisuke! This way!" I quickly grabbed Heisuke's hand and pulled him in the direction of the house. When we reached it, we ran in and slammed the door shut behind us. I then peered out through the crack between the door and its frame. The furies appeared to have given up on us and instead advanced towards the bodies of their fallen comrades. I can't believe they'll even go after their allies...I took my eye away from the crack. "I'll go make sure the rest of the house is safe, I'll be right back!" I checked all the rooms and let out a sigh of relief. It seems we're safe for now, but there's no time to waste. After making sure we were alone in the house, I went back to the bedroom I left Heisuke in. There I found him leaning against the wall, his hand clawing at his chest. "Heisuke!" He suddenly slumped to the floor, panting. "Daijōbudesuka?!"
"Gah...augh..." I know what I have to do. I didn't hesitate. When I thought of how much pain he was in, I barely even felt Aka Tatsu as it sliced neatly through my skin.
"Here Heisuke!"
"But..." Heisuke peeked at my bleeding arm from the corner of his eye before quickly looking away in denial.
"Please Heisuke, you have to drink my blood!"
"I-I don't-"
"What else are you gonna do, huh?! Just sit here and suffer!?"
"Ugh, I hate it...when you're right..."
"Heisuke, come on"
"I know...I've still...gotta f-follow...Hijikata-san's...o-orders, don't I...?" He stopped resisting and wrapped his supple lips around my freshly-made wound. "G-Gomen Chiyeko..."
