Chapter Six
I took three deep calming breaths, tucked a loose hair from my French braid behind my ear and greeted the security guard who opened the entrance door to Dreamscape Architectural Firm with a smile.
Today was my first day and luckily I was not suffering from a serious hang over. I made my way to the elevator at the right end corner of the lobby. It was elegant looking with plush sofas for waiting area, blonde receptionists, and cream-colored walls with black carpets. I punched the fourth floor button from the elevator panel, entered and the door closed.
The firm resided the whole fourth floor of the building. The elevator door opened and I went out, there was a long hallway and a large glass sliding door at the end. I walked my way at the door and was greeted by a brunette middle-aged woman with a warm smile that would make you want to smile back.
"Good morning, I presume you are the new secretary?" The woman asked while transferring the pile of documents in her left arm to give me her right for a handshake. It was polite and nice and made me look forward into meeting more of my now colleagues.
This wasn’t my first secretarial job, actually this was the third. I first experienced it in my mother’s office and by that time I was just a nineteen-year-old girl, side lining while trying to juggle studies with my life. The second was from a law firm at Clayton, which wasn’t owned by Nate’s parents.
"Yeah, I am Janelle Mae Smith. Just call me Jane." I smiled back and shook her offered hand. I noticed that her hands were warm and soft but her grip was firm, sort of welcoming. That calmed one fourth of my nerves and so my quivering smile turned genuine.
"Kathy Dikkins, from design committee. Welcome to dreamscape, dear. Your cubicle is the one nearest to the boss' office." She ushered me to go inside and she went out, probably out to do whatever she has to do with those files in her arms.
So far so good.
I started to walk towards the space Kathy told me was my cubicle and entered it without so much fuss when I heard a booming voice behind me. I turned to see a guy with dishevelled yet somehow, fashionable clean cut blonde hair with a charming smile. So much for the welcoming introductions, I mused.
"Good morning! I'm Paul Milan." He entered the cubicle comfortably and gestured his hand to indicate the space he stepped in with a smile.
"I'm Jane Smith, the new secretary." I shook his hand firmly and he nodded, still smiling.
“I thought so; otherwise you wouldn’t be standing here in this cubicle with the plate on the wall outside saying ‘Secretary’.” He said with a chuckle and a small smile played at the edge of my lips. He got a point but I was just being polite, introducing myself and what was my role in this place. I wanted to say it to him but I held my tongue and instead quirked an eyebrow. He looked at me with an amused look in his face. Wow, great, it was nice to know I was already amusing people at my first five minutes.
Another girl with a short strawberry blonde hair entered and beamed at me. The first thought entered my mind was that she looked like Barbie in a kick ass leopard print deathly heels. I could only wear heels up to three inches high, beyond that my knees would start to wobble.
“You are gorgeous! I'm Genie Gates." She gushed and shook my hand, almost yanking my arms out from its socket but her enthusiasm was contagious that I found myself chuckling, thankful that my colleagues were as welcoming as Santa’s wife.
"You're pretty yourself, I'm Jane. It’s so nice to meet you." I smiled blushing a little from her blatant compliment which sounded so sincere from her lips. I know I am relatively pretty, but no one aside from my mom and dad called me gorgeous. A pang seared inside me but I ignored it, like what I have always done in the past few years.
