Chapter Thirteen
I knocked on his door and his muffled 'come in' resounded from inside. I opened the door and walked into his desk and placed the steaming cup of coffee. He was working on a mini park renovation project so he was very busy. It was almost five and the others already went home. I went out of Nate's office to see Jas was about to go out.
"Bye, Jas!" I waved at her and she waved back. I sat on my chair and continued typing. Nate asked me if I could stay late to finish the reports and presentations so here I was. I glanced on the wall clock and was surprised to see that it was already six thirty. Time sure flies fast when you're doing something.
I whipped my phone out of my pencil skirt's pocket and dialed Amy's number. I asked her if she could stay in my place tonight since Looney couldn't baby-sit tonight due to a project she was completing, and I needed someone to look out for my daughter and like always, my savior, she said yes. "Hi Amy!" I chirped when she answered.
"Did you know that you just raised a playing machine right here?" She complained and I heard Nath's loud giggle on the background followed by a loud crash. I knew I should worry but those noises were normal occurrences in my house.
I laughed and felt my tensed back muscles relax. "I know right, I have to live with that every day!" I playfully scoffed making Amy laugh.
"Poor you! Now tell me what time are you going to get your ass here? Because even though I love you so much that we are practically twins, I can't spend another minute with your daughter, she'd like having a sugar rush or something." She said and I glanced at the clock.
"Uhm, I'm not sure, I'm working overtime... I'll see, and then call you okay?" I said and she mumbled her agreement. I heard a squeal and Amy's playful yelling. I smiled and ended the call.
I sighed and stood up to stretch my stiff muscles. I saved the file on my flash drive and printed everything.
"Still okay?" I asked as I trudged to him, I sat across him and placed the printed files on his desk. He scanned it and smiled at me. He looked tired, there were lines forming at the side of his eyes and somehow, he looked older. But despite that, he looked nothing less than the handsome Nathaniel Hughes I fell in love with back when I was fifteen. Whoa, hold your horses, cowboy Jane. What are you thinking? I chided myself.
"Thank you, Jane." He said and continued drafting.
"Sure." He nodded but didn't look up to me. I had the chance to study him. A smile formed in my lips, this side of Nate was the greatest thing on earth back when I was seventeen. And hey, it remained the same. He looked blissful though tired, he really loved doing landscapes back then and I knew he has the potential to be who he was right now. Even without me, I knew he'd do great.
At least you did the right thing of letting him go back then.
He glanced at me and his lips tugged into a smirk. I quickly averted my gaze and studied my high heels. I knew my face was flushed. He started rolling the blueprints and arranged it in a pile on the cabinet located at the corner of his office.
"Already done?" I asked and he turned to me.
"We don't want you to get bored, aren't we?" He said and took his coat off the rack and his keys.
"Wait, I'm okay, you don't have to---" he interrupted me by grabbing me by the shoulders and ushered me out of his office.
"Don't worry, I'm done, I was just finalizing it when you entered..." He said and I smiled.
Why am I smiling?
I don't know!
"Did you bring your car today?" He asked and I shook my head.
