Chapter 31
A tear cascaded on my cheek as I looked down at the man who could make a difference in my life, kneeling in front of me with a velvet box on his hands. Connor was everything I could ask for and I love him… yet why did my heart feel like breaking into bits? One word and everything would change; one word and everything would end.
I closed my eyes tight and took a long shaky breath, once the word left my mouth I know that either of us would go home wounded and crying but this was what I had decided. To stop hurting the person who loved me all these time.
“Yes.” I choked as I opened my eyes and looked at him behind my blurry eyes. He was looking at me wide-eyed, obviously shocked, maybe he was expecting me to reject him again, but no, this was the decision I made.
“Did I hear you right?” He asked and I nodded my head weakly as I smiled at him, slowly a heart-warming smile broke into his face and his features lit up. My throat constricted as tears welled behind my eyes making it hard for me to see.
“We can always start anew. No marks that will make us fragile, dangerous and ugly, just a past that will make us better and stronger.” Nate’s words resounded at the back of my head and it only made everything more painful.
Slowly, Connor slipped a ring on my finger it was beautiful just a simple silver ring showered with tiny diamonds, simple yet elegant. He then stood up and hugged me tightly, his warmth creeping deep within my aching heart. This was the right thing to do, right?
“I love you, Jane.” He breathed and more tears fell down my eyes as my shoulders shook slightly as I suppressed the sobs that were trying to escape my lips.
“I love you too.” It was not a lie, it was true yet it was making me tremble in pain. Nate’s face kept on flashing on my mind but I shook it off, Connor deserved happiness better than anyone did. Moreover, as if I would not be benefiting from this, he would give my daughter a complete family and he would love me with all his heart, giving the world to me.
The rest of the night passed with a blur, and then he drove me home. Connor was radiating with happiness that it was delightful to see, the warmth of his happiness rendered me momentary warmth too, splinting my heart together.
We stood awkwardly in front of my door after I fished out my keys and unlocked it, I was sure Looney was still inside babysitting my daughter, I could hear them playing.
“You want to go inside?” I invited him and he shook his head smiling widely at me, he looked so boyish, relaxed and relieved.
“I’ll pass… thank you for tonight; you just made me the happiest man alive on earth.” He grinned and I smiled back.
“No, I should be the one thanking you, for loving me unconditionally…” I said as I tried to gulp the lump that has been stuck on my throat all night. I lifted my hands to caress his face, tracing his smile with my thumb—my perfect man.
He inched towards me and lowered his head until we were nose to nose; he was gazing deep into my eyes so intently making my heart flutter inside my chest while his breath teased me.
“You’re my angel, you’re my everything.” He breathed as he leaned his forehead onto mine and I briefly closed my eyes accepting his words.
“I can’t thank you enough… you’re so perfect for me that I can’t believe I can call you mine now…” I said and opened my eyes and welcomed by his lips onto mine, at first it was just a light kiss then after a few seconds that for me felt like years, he licked my bottom lip, asking for entrance as his arms snaked its way at the small of my back.
