Chapter Twenty-three
NATE'S POV
I lay on my bed with my hands tucked under my head, staring distractedly on the white ceiling of my dim lighted bedroom. Her face never left my mind since yesterday night and it was seriously bothering me. Why would I kiss her in the first place? Moreover, I almost did it again earlier in the office! I sighed heavily and shut my eyes, but still, all I could see was her face, the way that the side of her eyes wrinkle whenever she smiles widely. That particular look she gave to Nath, it really bothered me how special I felt that night. It felt perfect.
A ring broke the silence in my apartment as my mobile phone vibrated in the bedside table. I took it and checked the caller ID, my heart accelerated upon seeing Jane's name flashing in the screen.
Why is she calling me at this time of the night?
I pressed the green button and placed the phone in my ear as my heart hammered erratically on my chest. I did not know why I am this nervous by just talking to her, but anticipating it too at the same time.
"Hello?" a small voice spoke that could not be Jane. A smile broke in my face when I realized it was Nath.
"Hi." I replied then I heard a childish giggle on the other end of the line with Jane's familiar voice telling her daughter not to make the call long.
"Hiya! How are you Uncle Nate!" Nath's enthusiastic greet made me chuckle as I sat and leaned my back on the headboard of the bed.
"I'm great, how about you?" I smiled, though she could not see it. This kid really could make my day brighter and stress-free.
"Uh-huh. I'm great!" she copied me accompanied by her childish giggle again, "are you busy tomorrow?" she asked, I could hear the hope coating her statement and it tugged a string in my heart. I walked my way in my working table just across my bed and took my planner. I have lots of meeting tomorrow, and an appointment with Mr. Everett. It's an important appointment.
"Uncle Nate?" she prompted,
"Uhh, hey, why? What's with tomorrow?" I asked distractedly,
"Tomorrow is my school performance... Mommy said you want to go...," she said. I felt my heart drop, how would I go?
"Can you go?" she pleaded and all rational thinking just flew outside the window.
"Of course! I'm sure you'd do great!" I said, and I heard her angelic laughter, I think, I could do everything for this girl, even ignoring an important appointment just to attend a school performance.
"I'm excited!" She squealed, I chuckled and I heard the phone being shifted.
"Hi." Jane's clipped voice replaced Nath's carefree laughter.
"Hey," I said shifting on my feet awkwardly. I know I was being a jerk to her earlier but seriously, I did not know how to act! My mind was in turmoil.
"Thanks, Nath is so happy, she's been bothering me to ask you... But I thought maybe you wouldn't want to go... But..." I interrupted her,
"Of course I'd go!" I said and silence fell over us.
"Oh. Thank you." She replied after a moment.
"J." I said calling her that felt so nostalgic. I realized how I missed calling her that.
"Hmm?" she said and the mood drastically changed into a more serious and awkward one.
"I'm sorry about earlier." I said, this is the right thing to do, right?
