Chapter Sixteen

I stopped dead on my track as my eyes roamed the scene in front of me. Nate is leaning casually on his car in front of my apartment. My heart hammered on my chest as I started sweating. What is he doing here?

I haven't gone to the office for two days already, I know I have to talk to him, but I'm trying to condition my heart about the possibilities. I'm absolutely not ready to face him. I was about to turn around and hide inside the confines of my apartment when he called me. My heart dropped.

"Stop hiding." He said and my heart raced inside my chest. This is ridiculous; I'm not being chased by a serial killer for God's sake! Try to calm down! I turned to look at him with my heart trying to get out of my chest.

"You scared me." I laughed nervously and he raised his eyebrow in amusement. Two days ago he's fuming with anger, now he's regarding me with amusement?

"Are you planning on resigning again?" He asked as I walked nervously his way.

"No!" I squeaked and cleared my throat. "No, I mean, absolutely not... I'm uhh.." I mentally smacked myself, why do I suck on making excuses? Ugghh...

"Get in." He said and I gaped at him. What the heck? No way in hell, I'll enter that and get murdered!

"I won't kill you. Grow up, Jane." He said while shaking his head. I cleared my throat and arched my brow.

"Who told you I'm thinking I'll get murdered?" I said as I slid inside his car. He trudged towards the other side and went in.

"Sure. It's not like I know what you think, right?" He said and my brows furrowed in confusion. Something's wrong here, why is he so normal?

"Who are you? And where did you hide the real Nathaniel Hughes?" I asked and he snorted.

"Funny." He rolled his eyes and I giggled. I actually giggled. I mentally smacked myself. Don't fall for this, I know he's not over it; he's just preparing me for the blow.

"How is she?" He asked quietly as we drove of the busy street of Nottingham.

I looked at him confused and he sighed in defeat. "Nath. How is she?" He repeated and realization dawned on me.

"She's okay... She's on the ballet school right now." I said quietly.

"Really?" He mused and my heart leaped on my throat when I saw a small smile in his lips. God, is it possible that he likes her too?

"You... You like her?" I asked, I'm actually afraid if he says no.

"I don't know. Maybe, I guess." He said his forehead creased.

"Why did you come here?" I asked.

"To talk everything out. More calmly now, I think." He shrugged and I felt my shoulders sag in relief. I'm glad he's willing to talk things out.

"Great." I said as I gazed outside the window. I watched silently as the pavement rolled.

We parked in a Starbucks and went in. We sat at a table near the glass window; there are a few people inside taking their morning coffees, with newspapers in front of them and for some, their laptops, tablets and iPads. I ordered cappuccino and he ordered black coffee then silence fell on us. I gazed outside the store, and I saw a lot of people dashing outside, probably trying to catch their buses and trains; and many people are fighting for the cabs.

"I want to start asking questions to you again, and I want you to answer." He started and I lazily turned my head to his direction. Okay, heart, please calm down.
