Chapter 39

Nate’s POV

Whistling a tune I just made up, I drove my way towards Clayton. I have been maximizing my time finishing the empire project at Hawaii just for this day, my daughter's first figure skating performance and since I've decided to be formally a part of my family's life, I would be at everything. Finally, I realized the thing I should be prioritizing, and that is to get my family back.

Many things had happened to Jane and me six years ago, creating a rift between us that seemed so impossible, but all along, the answers were just in front of our eyes.

It is for her to accept everything that has happened to her and for me to fight for her. I love her and that's the only thing I need. If she told me she don't want anything to do with me then so be it, though it would be hard for me, I would let her go to where she could attain happiness. This time around, I would not let her go without doing anything.

The stop light turned red and I stepped on the break, my hand grazed on the small box that has been burning a hole in my pocket. I smiled. This time I would do this right.

A screeching horn snapped me back to reality and a red car drove beside me, the window rolled down as he shot me a finger before he breezed past me. What the fuck? The stop light already turned green for a while now and I didn't even realize it.

Nothing could spoil the happiness that had settled inside my chest, not even a finger from a fucking stranger on a road, not even the goddamn heavy traffic along the highway in a chilly Friday afternoon, and I meant what I said.

My phone rang just when I killed the engine; I was in the gas station to pump. I sighed upon seeing the caller ID for it was my mom, it's probably about my daughter again, she has been nagging me to take an action. I was planning to, I just didn't want her to anticipate, because if I were to be rejected – though I really hope not - it would be a big blow for her and I don't want to disappoint her any further.

The part-timer shot me a warning look and gestured towards the poster saying 'please turn off your mobile phones' 'no smoking' and stuff. Shrugging, I ignored the call then set off after I refuelled.

It took me another hour to drive towards the mall where the show was ongoing. If I would be given the chance to be back with my family, I would definitely build our house here in Clayton. I wanted to erase all of Jane’s painful memories in this place and replace it with happier ones.

I parked the car on the open lot beside the building and went in, I was nervous and excited. With a smile plastered on my lips, I expected to see my daughter gliding on the big circular rink but it was another child performing. Maybe she was in the dressing room still, and I so wanted to see her already so without further ado I strode my way towards the dressing room purposively.

A girl around twenties smiled politely at me as I stopped in front of the door, her blue jacket said that she was a coach and so I smiled back at her. “Excuse me; do you know where I can find Nathalie Smith?” I wanted to change their family name into Hughes so badly, it sounded like a melody in my ears.

She was taken aback and I wondered why, her face became guarded. “May I know what your relationship with my student is?” She asked her voice still polite.
