Colten POV
"Let's finish our movie."Dad smiled, that crazy smile that I just so happened to inherit.
"F the movie, Mama who was that?" I turned the tv off. The room went silent.
"So y'all don't hear me talkin'? Somebody need to say somethin'."I demanded.
"Me and J gon' be upstairs."My brother Jeremiah dismissed himself and his girlfriend, leaving me staring at my parents.
"I think it's time."Mama told Dad. "Time for what?"I butted in. It's clear that everyone knew something but I didn't know anything. "I'm gonna go to bed. Y'all two need to talk."Ma got up and left me and Dad alone.
"Who is she?"I asked again.
"Look son, don't even worry about it. She's just some crazy fan of mine from back in the day when I used to rap."
"So why'd she come here looking for me?"
He fake yawned. "I'm tired. You tired?"
"No. Don't even think you getting away without telling me what's up."
He huffed, got up from the sofa and grabbed his keys from the counter.
"Aye Nic, we going for a ride."
"Okay. Don't forget your key."
"Aight."
I followed him to the garage and we got into his off white Monte Carlo. He backed out of the garage, out of the driveway and into the street. Twenty minutes into the ride, he turned the music down and we got out of the car.
"Ice cream?"
"I'll take some."I replied. We sat down at a table.
"Remember the girl that barged in the house?"He started.
"Yes. It was an hour ago."
"That was your mother."
"How come I've never seen her before a day in my life?"
"You've seen her before, you just don't remember. You were really little, around two years old when I took you from her."
"Why did you take me?"
"Because your mother was stupid. She had you around drugs and some people that I wouldn't approve of."
"So your wife, who I've been calling mom for practically my whole life, is really my step mother?"
"Yep. She stepped up like a real woman would and helped me take care of you."
"How come she isn't my biological mom?"
"I did some fucked up shit when I was young. I cheated on Nic with hella women back in the day. And you just so happened to be a result of it."
"She loves me though."
"Just like she loves all of my other kids and I haven't seen them in years either."
"You have other kids? Dad, what the hell were you doin' back then!"
"Being dumb. I got two other sons back in Louisiana also from cheating."
"What's my real moms name?"
"Shanice. Why?"
"Don't you think I should have a relationship with my real mom?"
"That's only if you want to. Ian gon' force you."
"I think I want to."
"As of right now, I don't have any contact information but you can look her up once we get back home. And I want you to know something else,"
"What?"
"Nicki will always be there for you, no matter what. So don't start treating her different now that you know you have another mom."
I nodded and finished my ice cream. When we got back home, the house was quiet. I went straight to my room and turned my laptop on. I need to do some research on my biological mom.
Vangi POV
"What're you gonna do about it?"I asked her on our ride to court.
"I want to be called Jessica. Since that's what my birth certificate says."She replied. "I can do that."I nodded. "Jess."
"You just have to make a nickname out of everything."She chuckled. The three of us got out of the car and walked into the building. It took hours to make sure everything was straight.
"We have to run everything over again so that it can be finalized."The man told us. The computer made a noise, making the man furrow his eyebrows.
"On your birth certificate, your moms name is Kayla Wilson. But the signature on this paper is something totally different."He searched through the papers again. "What do you mean?"Jessica asked him.
"Ms.Tanjer isn't even your real mother. And that name sounds really familiar. Jenkins, over here."He waved another lady over. She came over to us and looked at the papers. She looked up at Jessica with a shocked expression.
"You must be the baby girl that went missing seventeen years ago."
"Seventeen years ago? I'm fifteen."
"Your birth certificate shows that you're seventeen years old."Ms.Jenkins said.
"Ms.Tanjers clearly lied to you about your name and age."The guy added.
"I don't understand."Jessica whined.
"I can pull up your real parents then we can get all of this settled for good."The guy suggested.
"That sounds good."My mom butted in. The three of us went to sit down.
"Are you okay?"I asked.
"I think I'm fine. Just hungry."She rubbed her growing belly. Somehow, I knew she wasn't fine. She's only saying that because reality hasn't taken full effect yet.
"We don't want to keep you here all day considering that you probably had something else going on and thought this would be quick. So I'll just take your phone number and I'll call you when I get access to some information."Ms.Jenkins said. My mom gave her phone number to the lady and we left to get some food.
Today has been a long day.
